Forty years ago, the Etzel family discovered the old pig barn that now houses our w**ery and tasting room during a road trip in July 1986. Their serendipitous find was prompted by a classified ad in The Oregonian describing an 88-acre foreclosed family farm with a pasture suitable for a vineyard.

Curious and adventurous, the young family arranged a visit with the realtor to see what $129,000 could buy in the emerging w**e region of the Willamette Valley.

During their serendipitous visit, the Etzels stood atop the ridge crest of what is now our flagship vineyard. As they looked out over the sweeping vista, the young couple resolved to embrace this new adventure that would prove to redefine their lives.

Later that evening, as he reflected on the monumental task he had just agreed to undertake, Michael was inspired to invite fellow travelers to join the journey. He called his sister, Patricia, and her husband, Robert Parker, Jr., a rising w**e critic who would later become one of the most significant figures in w**e history. The two families set out to tackle this task together, and the Beaux Frères story officially began.

Beaux Frères is officially certified organic by Oregon Tilth, beginning with the 2026 vintage.

The certification is new. Our commitment to organic farming has been part of our approach for decades. We have long farmed with respect for the land, biodiversity, and the people who care for it.

Today, we raise a glass and say a hearty Happy 72nd Birthday to our founder, Michael G. Etzel, aka "The Dad" around here. We cornered him in our library room yesterday on the eve of his big day to capture his reflections on the milestone.

This coming July will mark the 40th anniversary of the day the Etzel family discovered this old abandoned pig farm on a road trip through Oregon, and we are all exceedingly grateful for that serendipitous encounter — the right family at the right place and the right time. Happy Birthday, Michael!
