On April 17, 2026, the Newberry Springs Fire Department was dispatched to a traffic collision on I-40 at the westbound Hidden Oasis. Upon arrival, Newberry Springs Fire Department found three semi-trucks with heavy damage and all of which were fully involved in fire.

The department immediately triaged the patients on scene, unfortunately determining that one individual was DOA, while another was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. Emergency medical services provided critical care to the injured while firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze.

Firefighters from Newberry Springs Fire Department helped in fire suppression efforts, utilizing multiple hoses and equipment to knock down the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and vegetation. The smoke from the fire was significant, prompting nearby motorists to reduce speed and exercise caution.

We extend our gratitude to all agencies that contributed to mitigating the scene, including: Yermo Fire Department, Daggett Fire Department, MCLB, Fort Irwin, San Bernardino County Fire Department, Desert Ambulance, and California Highway Patrol (CHP)

The collaborative efforts of all responding units ensured a swift and effective response to this critical incident. The scene was secured, and traffic was rerouted while investigations commenced to determine the cause of the collision.

Newberry Springs Fire Department remains committed to serving our community and ensuring the safety of our roads.

Today, the Newberry Springs Fire Department engaged in essential wildland training, focusing on a progressive hose lay technique to enhance our firefighting effectiveness. During this training, we simulated an “incident inside an incident,” simulating a medical emergency on a downed fire personnel within a wildland scenario. We practiced extracting the downed firefighter to a safe location. Throughout the exercise, we operated under the Incident Command System and utilized the Incident Response Pocket Guide to ensure seamless communication and coordination. This training underscores our commitment to safeguarding our community and preparing for any emergency. Together, we strive to make Newberry Springs a safer place!
