1963

Not only did the 1963 magnificent March on Washington happen 60 years ago with Martin Luther King’s vision of freedom and justice, which was one of the most important speeches of the 20th century, but so also a speech that JFK gave two months before on the foundation of peace in the world. This speech is complex, some of it dated, much of it universal, and much of it profoundly relevant today.

I hope you watch the entire, close to half-hour, speech, that history has called Kennedy’s Peace Speech. For those of us who grew up during this era, there was a new understanding of how people could join together on behalf of building a better world together. Not as a utopian empty ideal, but as a direct product of humanity understanding what is in its best interest.

Hi Everyone,

Here is Session 20 of the structural consulting series. What is amazing about all of these sessions is that after a relatively short period of time, compared to most other approaches designed to promote profound life changes, that the client has a real change of underlying structure, and therefore, their life patterns change from one that oscillates to one that advances.

For those of you who are in the helping professions, consultants, coaches, therapists, etc., I suggest you learn structural dynamics. The principle is that the underlying structure of anything will determine its behavior. If you are trying to support a change of behavior or deeply entrenched life patterns, without understanding the structural dynamics that generates those patterns, you will be unable to support real and LASTING change. All of your good work will eventually seem like it never happened as your client slips back into past patterns.

Most approaches are not structural, nor do they have an idea of the structural dynamics that are in play. Symptoms, rather than causes, are addressed. And what causes the client to be able to create a new lease on life disappears over a short time.

Denying History

The Florida Board of Education has set a new standard of how history will be taught in Florida schools. This comes after a long assault on the parts of history that tell the truth about America’s dark past of slavery. The board’s new account is that African-Americans “learned skills for their own personal benefit.” This implies that slavery was not that bad after all, and it may have even been good for those who were enslaved.

It is hard to believe that those who are in charge of “education” could be so… what can we say? Blind, corrupt, racist, dumb, and, of course, uneducated. Every country has its dark side and, therefore, its dark side of history. Something that was said in Florida was telling the truth would make white students feel bad. (Of course, it wasn’t put that way, but that was the jest of the idea.) It SHOULD make white students feel bad, as it should anyone who looks at what happened in the South in the slave era. Denying history because it might make one feel bad is folly and fraudulent. What happened, happened. We have only one of two ways to deal with this: acknowledge it or ignore it. What would we be ignoring? That humanity is capable of great wrongs and even evil.

When you’re in high school, you need to know about what happened in the past, even if it makes your ancestor look wicked, immoral, depraved, cruel, ruthless, and shameless. If they were, they were. The lesson taught is that humanity has a choice as to how it acts.

I can’t imagine what the board of education in Florida is trying to protect. Could it be that some of the racism that existed in the past is still with us? Could it be that they don’t want white people to look as bad as they were? Could it be that they themselves are unwilling to look history in the eyes and see it all, the good, the bad, and the ugly?
