The Newkirk Fire Department is prepared to respond throughout this winter weather event. We are constantly monitioring our channels with the US National Weather Service Norman Oklahoma to make sure we are on top of the latest information concerning the winter storm. We have all department vehicles ready to respond in town and in the rural area for any fire or EMS calls. Just know it may possibly takes us longer to get to you than normal due to road conditions. Especially in the rural area but we will be there.
A few safety tips we wanted to pass along are:
Make sure any space heaters you might use are plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector.
Keep space heaters at least 3' away from anything combustable.
Do not use your kitchen oven as a heater. If it is a gas oven there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, ovens create a fire risk when the door is open for long periods of time.
Make sure there is a emergency supply kit in your vehicle and extra blankets if you have to get out. We recommend no traveling during the storm but if you have to be prepared if you get stuck or stranded.
Make sure your phone is completely charged and have a charger in the vehicle.
We have a plan if the city does lose power and that power loss interferes with heating your home. If the power is going to off for a long significant time we will set up a warming station at Mark Branch (old high school gym) located at 9th & Maple. We will post on this page when we open the gym if it is needed.
Be prepared and be ready for heavy snow and very cold temperatures. We are under a a Winter Storm Warning and a Extreme Cold Watch until at least Monday morning at 9:00 AM.
If you need us call. We are ready to respond.
