What Does it Cost to Fill Physician Vacancies with Locum Tenens?

According to our research of government contracts, the average cost of a contracted locum tenens physician is approximately $1,760 per day. This includes an 8-hour shift plus being on-call until the next shift begins. (Rates vary significantly based on physician specialty.) The $1,760 per diem does not include travel or lodging expenses.

The study focuses on rates included in government contracts with 100 different physician staffing firms across the country. The data reflect 82 physician specialties and allied health positions and includes hourly rates for on-site services and hourly rates for after-hours on-call services. Medical Center Settlement Included Allegation of Kickbacks for Cardiology Practice Call Coverage

On February 9, 2022, the Department of Justice announced that Catholic Medical Center (CMC) will pay $3.8 million to settle allegations of kickbacks and False Claims Act violations. The qui tam lawsuit began when a complaint was filed on June 14, 2018, by Dr. David Goldberg, a cardiologist formerly employed by CMC. Dr. Goldberg (“the relator”) alleged that, among other concerns, CMC Heart Institute leadership oversaw a decade-long “moonlighting” arrangement that paid its physicians to provide weekend and holiday call coverage to the private practice of a high-volume-referral cardiologist, at no cost to her practice.

Briana Gordon is a member of BuckheadFMV's physician compensation valuation practice, bringing 15 years of experience assisting clients in the healthcare and life sciences industries. She provides fair market value opinions for the full range of physician services and related arrangements involving hospitals, health systems, and other healthcare providers. Her work in the life sciences sector includes the assessment of compensation in consulting arrangements for a broad array of healthcare professionals and key opinion leaders.

Briana holds a Certified Valuation Analyst designation from the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts and is an Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia State University and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.

Will is a healthcare valuation consultant with over a decade of experience. He has worked with non-profit and for-profit health systems, physician groups, PE and venture-backed healthcare companies, and healthcare attorneys across the United States. Will holds a BA from Washington & Lee University and an MBA from the University of Arizona.

​He is a Certified Valuation Analyst through the National Association of Valuators and Analysts. He writes and speaks frequently on healthcare valuation issues, and is the founder of Scope Research, which maintains the most comprehensive database of public, verifiable healthcare transaction market data.

For more than 20 years, Darcy has assisted hospitals, health systems, investors, physicians and other providers with business and equipment appraisals, fair market value opinions, and physician compensation assessments. Darcy has business degrees from Emory University and the University of Georgia.

She is an Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers and a Certified Valuation Analyst through the National Association of Valuators and Analysts. She frequently speaks and writes on issues pertaining to the valuation of healthcare assets and services.
