Sticking to one thing is hard because of the opportunity cost involved.

Opportunity Cost: the value or potential gain that is given up, when we choose one alternative over another.

But remember, choosing to focus on project A, doesn’t mean Project B is entirely forsaken.

Project B could simply be paused until A is completed.

Flitting back and forth between several projects interrupts the direct path to finishing any of them.

Your brain must keep refocusing and redirecting every time you switch from one project to the next.

Similar to multitasking, it takes time and energy for the brain to remember where it left off, and to resume the previous flow.

Love this quote by Josh Billings.

“Be like a postage stamp. Stick to one thing until you get there.”

Let’s be the postage stamp today and champion the mission to successfully deliver one item - as swiftly and directly as possible - to its completed destination.

The project you choose for your focus may be a no brainer. Great! Set the others aside and crack on with your key task!
..But what do you do when ALL projects seem important and the thought of abandoning ANY of them feels counterintuitive?

Here are a few practical questions to run past each task/project on your plate right now, to help decide which warrants ‘sticking to’ and which can pause until later, if at all?:

🤔 How much do I really value this project, personally and/or professionally?

🤔 What would I lose in the long-term by not doing it at all?

🤔 What do I gain long-term by sticking to this project?

🤔 When I compare the long-term outcomes of each of my projects, which produces the most valuable or highest impact reward?

*You may find that the outcomes are different in category, and you’ll thus need to decide the determining factor.

For instance, one outcome could provide an ‘efficiency and time-savings result’. Whereas another project could yield ‘revenue-producing results’.

Either could be considered valuable and high impact. It depends on the circumstances and which ‘type’ of outcome most benefits you, your life, your business.

🥊Email vs. High Leverage Task🥊

Honor your high leverage activities by giving them preferential treatment!

Before you launch emails, or start anything else for that matter, always ...ALWAYS ...take time for the high impact stuff first!

Once you get going with the hustle and bustle of the day, it’s too easy to let other demands hi-jack your time.

Days, weeks and months could drift by without you making the progress you want, because everything else may feel like more priority in the moment. So that’s what gets the attention.

As a result, you seldom get to the high impact, longer-term work that’s so important.

I get it. But you won’t achieve your goals with this approach.

So. Let’s avoid disappointment, shall we?

Resist all temptations and commit to knocking out some quality work, first thing, on a project that will (ultimately) give you a better ROI than checking emails.

In fact, think of this activity as ‘paying yourself first’. Get that high leverage dosh in the bank before the day begins. Make it a habit.

You will...
🔥Feel great about making time for - and actually working on - the really important stuff!
🔥Feel energized for experiencing ‘real’ achievement so early in the day.
🔥Feel chuffed that no matter what else the day throws at you, you’ve already acted on your most important work.
🔥Achieve results and reach goals faster.
🔥Improve and reinforce your ability to prioritise.
🔥Build trust and confidence in yourself as ‘someone who gets the right things done’.

Isn’t that worth putting emails off for at least an hour every day?

You may feel antsy at first, but as I said, don’t worry about those emails ...or anything else secondary in nature. They will be there, like laundry, waiting for you.

*NB I’m sure it goes without saying, but if there is a crucial, or time-sensitive reason you would need to check emails before anything else, by all means honor the nature of your work.

Just put blinders on to dip in, handle what you need, and then get out, so you can turn your focus to your high leverage task.

Do it! You’ve earned a quick win!

Been going at it heavy today on some tough, brainy work? But feel guilty to stop and take much of a break?

First of all. No guilt needed when it comes to taking a brain breather.

Secondly, I bet you can find a fairly mindless task that would be a semi-productive thing to do while you put the kettle on, without further taxing yourself mentally! 🤔🤔

For instance, is it time to w**d out those excess pens and markers and highlighters and whatnot that frustrate you when you’re trying to find one that works? 🖊✏️❌😩😩😩

Kill two birds with one stone.

✅ Benefit from the needed break
✅ Accomplish a worthwhile ‘quick win’ task that will give you a satisfying feeling of completion.

If your writing utensils are in top working order, what other mindless (but worthy!) mini-task could you indulge yourself in?

Put the kettle on! ☕️

❤️ Double tap if it’s time for a break!

What task(s) are you batching today?

Batching is a productive way of knocking out several of the same task in one go. For instance making several sales calls, processing and responding to emails, recording several podcast episodes or filming videos, recording all your business expenses for the month, even running errands like I am today ...you get the idea.

The efficiency comes from your brain getting in the flow of repeating the same/similar task over and over.

If you were to make one phone call, then stop and create an email, then run to the post office, there are so many lost minutes in there with your brain changing and adjusting to working on that next new activity.

Better to ‘batch’. You’ll cut down on processing time and get through more when you’re in phone-call mode or emails mode or content creation mode ...or whatever.

What batching mode are you in right now?

If you don’t normally work this way, what could you try first?

How far along the bridge are you?

It’s a new week so I’m throwing a dose of Motivation Monday at you, to get you off to a good start!

Love this Jim Rohn quote. A great reminder of the practical impact, effectiveness and need of DISCIPLINE, to get from goals to accomplishment.

I know. ‘We just need to be disciplined” It sounds so simple and obvious. 🙄 ...But sadly, simple isn’t always ‘easy’.

Many of us know exactly what we need to do to move things forward, yet fail - for a spectrum of reasons - to make it happen.

Is this happening to you?

What’s your ‘one thing’ you really want / need to accomplish this week to get closer to, or even reach, an important goal?

What could get in the way?
👿distractions / interruptions?
👿procrastination?
👿over-committed schedule?
👿not blocking time to work on it?
👿getting started too late in the day?
👿not feeling ready, prepared or in the mood?

Time to fight back. Here are my 4 Ds for Discipline:
👊🏻 DECIDE that you are committed not only to achieving your goals, but even moreso to the discipline of taking the steps needed to get there. Action starts with decision!
👊🏻DETERMINE dedicated time blocks in your schedule when you will do the work. Take into account the best time of day when you’re at your highest energy levels. Block and treat the time as if it were an appointment.
👊🏻 DIVE into the work as scheduled, with no delay, regardless how you feel about it at the time. Work solidly with blinders on until complete, or until the scheduled time is up.
👊🏻DEFER interruptions, distractions and all squirrels 🐿 - that may pop up when working on your goals - to another time, so you can stick to the plan and get things done.

Embrace discipline .. and keep moving across that bridge! 🎯

Can you relax today?

Happy Sunday! Chillaxin with the Hubby and catching up on some reading with an indulgent cuppa before dinner time.

We’ve already mapped out our meals and workouts for the week ahead, and my home office is primed for tomorrow’s tasks.

It’s so important to...

A. Take that much-needed downtime from the onslaught the week. Doesn’t have to be Sunday, but we all need ‘time off’ to unplug, recharge and enjoy ourselves!

We also need to...

B. Be fully present so we make the most of our downtime. It’s hard to focus if you’re preoccupied with everything on your plate, especially if you’re not feeling prepared.

So if your Sunday isn’t as relaxing and enjoyable as it could be, because your mind keeps wandering ahead, then you’ll want to ..

C. Take a few moments to glance at the upcoming week to give your brain some advance notice. Jot notes of anything that comes to mind that needs attention or preparation so you can address it tomorrow and forget about it today.

While you’re at it, what can you plan in advance to alleviate decisions during the week? Meal planning is one of my favourites!

If prepping/planning the week ahead isn’t already a default weekend task, consider making it one. Sure, it takes a few minutes, but the peace of mind you gain - so you can fully enjoy your time off - is well worth the effort.

Plus, others in your household will appreciate your real presence, too!

❤️ Double tap if you’re prepped and ready for the week ahead ...and tell me in the comments👇🏻what you’re doing to soak up those Sunday Vibes!

Happy Friday! Have you taken a few minutes to review this past week? Always good to reflect and acknowledge your achievements and progress ...and, equally, to identify what didn't go quite to plan, and how you might make adjustments going forward.

If you find yourself continuously NOT taking action on a particular task, project or activity, I'd love to know what it is. Would you please share?

It's also important to consider why you may be resisting this particular task, project, activity ...so please include this as well.

Is the task...

- Boring and tedious?

- Complex and overwhelming?

- Unknown, unfamiliar territory?

- Awkward or uncomfortable (i.e. awkward conversations)

I think by now we all know that we ALL procrastinate. Hand in the air, I'll confess I procrastinated on doing doing this tiny 2 minute video! 😂

Do pipe up and let me know what you've been avoiding, and why you think you've been avoiding it.

Extra points if you take some form of action as a result! 👊🏻

One more thing in the bin - literally or figuratively speaking - is one less thing on your mind, one less thing to have to deal with or ruminate over, one less decision to be made. Less stuff cluttering our desks, homes and lives means more space to function freely. Fewer commitments, activities and time wasters means more time to focus on what is best for us - personally and professionally. What will you send to the bin today? Get that hefty decision off your plate, get rid of that pesky thing taking up space and bringing you down, untether yourself from anything that keeps you stuck and not progressing. What’s your biggest annoyance at this present moment? Imagine tossing whatever it is into the bin. How would your business and or personal life feel without it? Go on. Be brave. The bin is waiting.
