What is your favorite part about working at NCE?

Company culture and diversity always keeps my morale high. The folks here at NCE are always happy to lend each other a hand to ensure that work is completed and done in an efficient manner.

What drew you to NCE originally?

I was recommended by a sibling. I was hoping that my past construction labor experience would carry over and be beneficial to the work environment. It’s help given some insight to a few folks here already. The small unit cohesion (but fast growing) really allows everyone to channel their thoughts and comments quickly.

What’s been your proudest moment at NCE?

Being an approachable leader to others and providing them advice and insight whenever I can.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do what you do?

Continue to push and continue to learn. Open your ears and listen to what other individuals are telling you. Don’t ever get complacent, you should be looking to be/do the next best thing.

What’s the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

“We build it as fly it” Essentially saying that things can be learned from trial and error.

What’s your moto/personal mantra?
A: I believe in keeping morale high. Workers with high morale will output more productivity.

Alison has been at NCE since March 2021. She manages the Data Analytics team, which means she leads a group of analysts who leverage the data that our project teams produce and maintain, and turns it into actionable insight. On a day-to-day basis, she works with developers and project managers to bring all our data together, and Alison works with her team to produce beautiful and insightful reports for our clients.

What is your favorite thing about working at NCE?

We’re small but mighty! There aren’t many of us, but we have the skills and expertise to be right where we need to be to make an impact with our clients. I’m proud of that. Plus the office kitchen always has snacks!

What drew you to NCE originally?

What first drew me to NCE was a combination of the company’s pace of growth and the opportunity to support a team of engineers. I started my career in engineering, so I have an appreciation for how important the work is. And while I’ve worked for many companies of varying sizes in my career, I find that I really enjoy quickly-growing companies that emphasize innovation – just like NCE.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do what you do?

Just start working with data! The internet is full of resources that you can use to get free training, download sample data sets to practice on, and connect with other data professionals. The more experience you get handling and communicating with data, and working with other folks who do so as well, the better prepared you will be to step into an analytics role.

What’s the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

It’s really all about people. Technical skills are worth nothing if you can’t bring your coworkers and clients with you on the journey.

What’s your personal mantra?

Be kind.

Smart City trials are ongoing, many with LiDAR which offers performance consistency in bad weather and lighting, and data privacy. Real deployments will rely on ease of use, reliability, performance consistency and costs, especially since these investments will need to be made by public entities.

Every Tuesday, we'll highlight one of our incredible NCE team members, starting with Project Manager John Koney!

John started at NCE in July 2020 and has been serving Pacific Gas and Electric Company through customer service, project management, and process improvement. He's overseen and rolled out software development projects for PG&E and ensured their success and stakeholder acceptance. John's also provided Utility training to PG&E and NCE personnel, and starting soon he will be the official PG&E Engineering Onboarding trainer for all new Design Engineers and Project Engineers.

What drew you to NCE originally?

I have a lot of experience in the industry, and I could tell NCE was unique and full of potential you don’t often see. I also looked forward to working for a different time zone so I can enjoy my children in the morning and even have time to run errands!

What’s been your proudest moment at NCE so far?

When I heard PG&E was impressed with my level of service and professionality and chose me as a candidate to be their Engineering trainer.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do what you do?

The advice is simple – doing it is the hard part: Be disciplined. Force yourself to be reliable, friendly, and hard working and you will go far in your career.

What’s the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

Life is short – take risks & actions speak louder than words so say less and do more!
