Peter Max, whose psychedelic brand of Pop art captured the spirit of the 1960s counterculture movement and spawned a multimillion-dollar commercial empire, has died. He was 88. Max’s death at a Manhattan hospital, after a long battle with dementia, was confirmed by his son, Adam Max.
For a time in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Max’s brightly colored and clean-lined work was everywhere. Blending Op Art, Pop Art, and psychedelia, his images felt modern, accessible, and tied to the era’s interest in alternative forms of spirituality.
