The GET UP Project: Getting Educated to Understand Parenting

The GET UP Project: Getting Educated to Understand Parenting We provide parenting education and resources to inspire trustees of children. The first four years of a child’s life sets the foundation for future learning.

Our intent is to be a driving force in getting caregivers geared up and knowledgeable about how their contributions can significantly influence their child’s success. The GET UP Project provides services to prepare adults who nurture, educate, and care for children and youth in ways that foster optimal success in educational, emotional and social development. Here at The GET UP Project we seek to

highlight the importance of “understanding” in fostering positive relationships between individuals who find themselves in “parenting” roles (hereafter referred to as trustees) and the children and youth that they seek to educate, guide, protect, and nurture. Parents need to know the ways in which kindergarten has become more advanced and technical. Trustees have the responsibility of providing the educational foundation during those crucial years. Price feels strongly that parents need to understand how their choices affect a child’s future success in school. She also recognizes that people working with parents and children need the support of someone with an education background to share this information. She has spent her career preparing children for kindergarten and future school success. The name, The GET UP Project, was created to inspire trustees of young children to get up and get active to insure the best future for children. The logo is a West African Adinkra Symbol called Mate Masie whose implied meaning is “I Understand.”

Valerie Scott Price in Newport News, VA founded The GET UP Project in 2005. After working in the field of early childhood development and public education for 30 years, Price realized that many individuals educating, nurturing and caring for children and youth did not grasp the full significance of their role in influencing a child’s success in today’s world.

School is almost out. I have a couple of tips for parents to keep order this summer.
* Try really hard to keep a routine for your child/children. An occasional off schedule day is fine, but children feel more secure with structure.
* Keep reading a daily part of the day- even several times a day.
Join your local library's summer reading program. Get a library card for your child. The local library has programs for all ages.
* Incorporate your child/children in planning and cooking meals. Try new recipes.
* Consider having your child/children take swim lessons.
* Make everywhere you go a fieldtrip. Talk about where you are going and what the people do who work there.
* Have patience and plan something fun everyday. Enjoy!!
