At first glance, this cracked cedar looked like a loss.

The base was badly splintered, and part of the tree appeared destined for the cleanup pile. But the damage didn’t tell the whole story.

Stephen placed the remaining log on a Cook’s HD3238 and started cutting. Beneath the broken exterior was warm red cedar and enough sound wood to produce long, natural-edge boards.
