The recycling of steel cans (also known as tin cans) has been an integral part of local recycling programs for decades.
These cans, which are actually tin-plated steel cans, are used for soups, tuna fish, diced tomatoes and other food products. Of the typical materials found in curbside recycling buckets, bins or carts, steel cans represent 2.5% of the total tonnage collected at the curb.
According to the DEP’s recycling statistics, almost 50,000 tons of steel cans were recycled in New Jersey in 2022! Steel cans are easy to identify since they will stick to a magnet.
