Did you know? 🤔 In addition to guest speaking in public high school business classes, I also have taught a homeschool “Intro to Business” class. I’m heading into another semester, and putting final touches on the syllabus; my cat, “Patrick”, however, feels I should be attending to his needs instead right now. 🐈 I enjoy teaching the teens in order to boost their knowledge ahead of when they’ll need the info on everything from creating a résumé, job searching and navigating interviews to business etiquette, finding a mentor, and building transferrable skills. 📚 I’ve been blessed in my career to have some amazing individuals to learn from—as well as workshops and professional development programs—and so I love sharing as much of that as I can with the teens, to help shape the future workforce in positive ways. 👍 Care to chime in below with suggestions on things of which I should be sure to educate these high school juniors? What business/career advice do you wish you had gotten at 16/17? 💡 Can’t wait to see how they will “grow and glow” across the next 15 weeks and beyond! 🌻

2024 was my first year hunting. Growing up on a dairy farm, my dad was not a hunter and so neither me nor any of my siblings got into it. But thanks to my husband, Andy, I’ve been introduced to a lot of wonderful experiences including hunting since we met in 2018. With Andy I learned how to raise goats, pigs, sheep, and chickens when we had our homestead. He’s helped me become a better target shot. I’ve learned more about politics, history, religion, and many other intellectually-stimulating topics through him. He’s definitely on my list of Top 5 most influential people in my life. Knowing him has altered my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined, and I’m so grateful. And even though he’s mainly involved in my personal side of life, my experiences because of him have impacted my professional life. How about you? Book recommendation: Eric Termuende’s “Rethink Work”. In June I attended a conference in Atlanta focused on recruiting, training, and retaining employees. ✈️ All of us who attended received a copy and also enjoyed Eric’s live presentation. The book’s an easy, stellar, on-point read from cover-to-cover. 👍👍 I nodded along with each page turn, and flagged numerous pages for excellent ideas to implement from creating more clear and transparent job descriptions to improving both culture in the workplace and the interview process to attract candidates that truly “fit”. Anyone involved with recruiting, hiring, and managing employees should read Eric’s excellent insights. 🌻

Sunday after church service, I had a lovely woman sitting in an adjacent bench ask me if I was the gal who did a video series about businesses. 😊 I said yes, and she remarked how much she enjoyed watching them. As we chatted, I said she was among several in recent months who have commented as such to me, and I’ve been toying with idea to continue the series and do more videos. I absolutely love connecting people to other people, businesses and resources, which takes 1+1 and turns it into 3, 4, or even greater! So stay tuned as who knows—not even I do—what will come from this endeavor, but hopefully more connections and fun times! 🎉 🙌 PLEASE comment below and chime in with a recommended small business (see prospective types from above) you adore, patronize loyally and want others to know about, helping that small business to grow and glow! If you’ve never heard of Kathy Kolbe and the Kolbe Conation Test she created, I highly recommend this documentary, which was recently released about her research and findings into the conation or “doing” part of our minds. Her father was highly reknowned, as he created the Wonderlic test. But Kathy felt there was so much more beyond just cognition and feelings, and boy, was she right! It is so timely that I watched this documentary earlier this week, not knowing until this morning that she actually passed away around the same time (on May 5). I have no doubt her influence will remain for many years to come, just like Dale Carnegie, Zig Ziglar, and others.

I took the Kolbe Index A to find my “score” (8-6-4-3) in September 2023, and have reviewed my results several times since, each time getting a renewed enthusiasm to dig deeper into learning more about myself, developing my strengths, and understanding my “M.O.”, or how I do things, all for the purpose of personal and professional fulfillment. I’ve decided I’m also going to have my teen take the Kolbe, as I believe it’ll be an insightful tool for planning our homeschooling curriculum. Two quotes from Kathy in this documentary that really resonated with me:
1) “We can teach skills; we can’t change instinct.”
2) “The dumbest conversations we can have are about how smart people are, and the smartest conversations we can have are about how we are going to use the abilities we have purposefully.”

Never give up. Take a break. Get some rest. Hydrate. Eat. Go for a walk. Give yourself some TLC. Then come back out swinging. We all know baby steps add up to big things over time. Keep moving forward. 🌻
