At Citadel, "above and beyond" isn't a slogan, it's something our officers show us on the hardest nights. On August 15, Officer Gavin Seeley proved it.

Gavin was posted at the Grand Junction Regional Airport when two flights were diverted, leaving more than 75 passengers stranded overnight with no hotel rooms available. Emotions were high, and it was a tough situation for travelers and airport staff alike.

Gavin didn't just hold his post, he stayed well past the end of his shift and stepped up. He handed out water and pizza to stranded travelers, gave Citadel stickers to the kids, welcomed people to the Grand Valley, and helped keep a stressful environment calm and supportive. His efforts were noticed beyond our team, too: a Grand Junction Police officer working that night personally recognized Gavin for going above and beyond to help passengers.

That's what it means to be Citadel Strong. Moments like this are exactly how trust gets built, with a client, with a community, and with the travelers who just needed someone to make a bad night a little easier.

Armed or unarmed? It's one of the first decisions in any security program, and the data says most properties get more from the answer that costs less.

There are roughly 1.27 million security officers working in the U.S. today (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The instinct that "armed = safer" drives a lot of them onto sites that don't need it, but the evidence points the other way for most environments. It's the visible presence that does the work. A RAND randomized controlled trial found that increasing unarmed security patrols cut victim-reported crime by 16%, a drop researchers attributed to deterrence before incidents happened, not to any use of force.

That's what a trained, professional unarmed officer delivers: deterrence, access control, sharp observation, accurate reporting, and a calm first point of contact. For offices, residential communities, commercial properties, and most events, that prevents the overwhelming majority of problems, without the added cost, optics, or escalation a firearm introduces.

So when is armed justified? When the risk profile genuinely calls for it. There were 470 workplace homicides in the U.S. in 2024 (BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries), and 79% of workplace homicides are shootings (NIOSH). Roughly 46,000 workplace robberies happen each year (NIOSH). Cash handling, high-value assets, a history of violent crime, or a credible specific threat are exactly the conditions where a visible armed deterrent earns its cost, and even then, a good armed officer leads with de-escalation. The weapon is the last option, not the strategy.

The takeaway isn't "armed" or "unarmed." It's match the response to the actual risk. More firepower doesn't automatically mean more safety, often it just means more cost and more liability.

Workplace safety usually makes us think of fire drills and wet floor signs. But one of the risks employees worry about most, workplace violence, often has no plan behind it at all.

Here's the encouraging part: it's more preventable than most people think.

Incidents rarely come out of nowhere. There are usually warning signs, and organizations that are prepared tend to do a few things well

- Control who gets in the building
- Take reports and concerning behavior seriously, and act on them
- Train employees on what to recognize and what to do
