Photographers spend a lot of time deciding whether an image is technically successful, commercially useful or strong enough for the portfolio.

Time has a completely different grading system.

A photograph that wasn't the hero image from an assignment can become the photograph a family treasures years later. A routine show photograph can eventually document a horse, rider or place that no longer exists. An image that had very little commercial significance when it was created can acquire enormous historical or emotional significance.

We can't know which photographs will eventually matter for reasons that have nothing to do with photography.

That raises an interesting question for working photographers: How much of what we create are we preserving with the assumption that its value might change over time?

Here’s a pretty simple test for photography advice: ask what happens if you don’t follow it.

If the answer is that you’ll misrepresent the horse, violate a contract, create a safety problem, fail to meet the client’s needs or deliver a product that doesn’t work for its intended use, you’re probably dealing with a legitimate professional consideration.

If the answer is basically, “Well…I just don’t like it,” you’re probably dealing with preference.

That doesn’t make the advice worthless. Someone else’s preferences and experiences can absolutely help you figure out your own.

But there is a big difference between:

“Here’s why I do it this way.”

and

“This is the way it has to be done.”

Knowing the difference is part of becoming experienced enough to make your own decisions.
