TECH TIP TUESDAY: 80 years ago this week Raytheon Manufacturing Company filed the first patent application for the microwave cooking process. The first commercially available microwave, the Radarange, was sold in 1946 by Raytheon. It was massive, standing nearly 6 ft tall and weighing over 750 lbs, with a price tag of around $5,000 (equivalent to over $50,000 today). The Radarange was water-cooled and consumed 3 kilowatts, three times the amount of modern microwaves.

TECH TIP TUESDAY: Your range hood or over-the-range microwave has a filter that captures grease from the stove (and, in some cases, a charcoal filter that helps reduce odors). The grease filter should be cleaned once every three months, while the charcoal filter should be replaced every six months. Charcoal filters are only used when recirculating air back into the kitchen. The grease filter or filters underneath the microwave can easily be cleaned in your dishwasher or with hot soapy water.
