Advocacy is one of the most important roles in an investigation!

As law-enforcement officers, it’s on us to advocate for our victims, while also partnering with advocates that can give additional support to victims and survivors throughout the entire investigative and court process.

There’s no better example of that than in Marlene Bright from the Norfolk Family Justice Center!

In April, Brian had the opportunity to see her receive the unsung hero award from the Office of the Attorney General in Virginia.

This week, Jon got to see her at the violent crimes conference. She has spent several decades, advocating for victims, and still putting in the work by attending conferences and trainings. What an amazing example of an advocate for those she serves!

Keep up the great work, Marlene!

🚴‍♂️ World Bicycle Day 🚴‍♂️

Today, on World Bicycle Day, we're reminded that a bicycle can be much more than a way to exercise or enjoy the outdoors. For many in the law enforcement community, it has become a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and brotherhood.

At Pinnacle TCI, we are proud to be retired law enforcement officers who continue to serve the profession by helping cops help cops. Over the years, we've logged countless miles through programs like the Law Enforcement United Road to Hope, riding in honor of officers whose watches ended far too soon and in support of the families they left behind.

But remembrance doesn't only happen during organized memorial rides.

Every time we clip into the pedals, hit the road, feel the wind on our faces, and enjoy the freedom of another day, we're experiencing moments that some of our fallen brothers and sisters never had the opportunity to enjoy. Their lives were cut short while serving others, and that reality should never be forgotten.

So today, whether you're participating in a memorial ride, training for your next event, or simply taking a casual ride around your neighborhood, take a moment to remember those who can no longer ride beside us. Honor them by living fully, appreciating the gift of another day, and never forgetting their sacrifice.

The miles matter. The memories matter. The fallen matter.

Progress Over Perfection.

I had the opportunity to spend time training with the team at Marine 1 Solutions as part of a dive qualification process. As someone who has spent a career teaching and training others, I can say that great instructors are hard to find—and today was a reminder of what great instruction looks like.

The patience, encouragement, and professionalism shown throughout the day made a lasting impression. Diving is a skill set that demands discipline, confidence, and repetition. While I didn’t complete every objective I set out to accomplish today, that’s okay. Mastering any skill worth having requires persistence, humility, and the determination to keep showing up.

Next week, I’ll be back in the water, ready to continue learning and improving. The goal isn’t just to pass a qualification—it’s to become truly proficient and confident in the skills that matter.

A huge thank you to the entire team at Marine 1 Solutions for investing the time to work with us and for creating an environment where learning and growth are encouraged. If you’re looking for dive training, equipment, public safety diving support, or professional instruction, I highly recommend reaching out to them. They are true professionals who are committed to helping divers succeed.

At Pinnacle TCI, we believe that training never stops. Whether it’s investigations, interviewing, leadership, or diving, the pursuit of excellence requires continuous learning.

June 1 marks the beginning of a new month and a new opportunity to learn, grow, and serve others.

Whether you're a patrol officer responding to calls, a detective working a complex investigation, an advocate supporting survivors, or a leader investing in your team, every day presents an opportunity to improve.

At Pinnacle TCI, we believe excellence isn't achieved overnight—it's built one conversation, one case, and one decision at a time.

Here's to a month of growth, resilience, and service.

What are your professional goals for June?

12 years ago today we lost an amazing cop, friend, father, husband, brother, son and more. We will never forget that night and the tragedy that wreaked havoc across our city.

Brian Jones and Mark Rodriguez were both men of faith and called home. 12 years later I still wonder “why”. I remember coming home after a 24 hour shift and the floodgate of emotions and questions sat in. That next morning, the weather was beautiful, birds were chirping and I couldn’t help but to think of how unfair it all seemed. I thought of the brokenness of Brian’s wife having to go home and tell their 3 kids that daddy wasn’t coming home.

Those 3 kids have grown into amazing young adults and I couldn’t be prouder of them. Mark’s legacy lives on through his school, Norfolk Christian, where he will not be forgotten.

Tragedy strikes and we don’t always know the why, but it’s important that we always honor and remember those that were taken from us too soon.

Another outstanding two days in the books for our course, Beyond the Obvious: A Deeper Dive in Death and Homicide Investigations.

While weather complications unfortunately prevented one of our instructors, Bill Simon, from making it into town, Marisa Edelberg and Jon Smith stepped up in a big way — delivering two days packed with case studies, practical investigative experience, and meaningful discussion surrounding death and homicide investigations.

A huge thank you to the Biloxi Police Department for once again serving as an incredible host agency. We truly appreciate your continued partnership and hospitality. Every time we come to the region, your agency makes us feel welcome, and we already look forward to returning.

To everyone who attended, thank you for your engagement and commitment to sharpening your investigative skills.

If you missed this class, visit our website at www.pinnacletci.com to register for an upcoming course, or email us at [email protected] if your agency is interested in hosting this or any of our training programs.

🚔 Another outstanding training event in the books for Pinnacle TCI! 🚔

Detective David Ruskey recently presented our Three-Day General Investigations for New & Aspiring Detectives Course, and the feedback was exceptional — as usual! The course evaluations were outstanding, and participants shared how much they enjoyed the hands-on instruction, real-world investigative insight, and practical techniques they can immediately apply in the field.

A huge thank you and shout out to the host agency, the Northwest Shoals Community College Police Department in Muscle Shoals, for their hospitality and support in making this training a tremendous success.

Pinnacle TCI has several more courses coming to the region and across the country, and we look forward to continuing to provide high-quality investigative training to law enforcement professionals nationwide.

Be sure to visit Pinnacle TCI to view upcoming courses and register for any of our training opportunities.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Today, we remember these 15 Marines who deployed in 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom II and never made it home. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.

We owe a debt that can never truly be repaid to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to the families who continue to carry that loss every single day. May we always honor their memory, support the loved ones they left behind, and never take for granted the freedoms secured by their service.

At Pinnacle TCI, we remember. We honor. We are forever grateful.
