Every sale has a few pieces that do not fit in a neat category, and those are often our favorites.

Estate Treasures 87 has a hand chiseled Murano crystal owl and an Oiva Toikka Rainbow Tern with two matching glass eggs. There is a 1986 quarter ounce American Gold Eagle from the very first year of the series, a Versace DV One skeleton chronograph in a limited edition, and a stainless steel goliath grouper by Steel Alive of Tennessee.

A Mexican leather macaw hangs from its brass perch, a hand carved wooden mermaid swims across the wall, and a Peruvian tumi pendant brings silver and copper together. And then there are the dentists: a Capodimonte porcelain dentist by Cazzola and a whole collection of vintage dentist figurines. We cannot explain why they are so charming, but they are.

Estate Treasures 87 has a global side that is worth a slow scroll.

There is an ancient West Mexican pottery figure, possibly Nayarit, dating to roughly 100 BC to AD 250, a Lumi war shield from Papua New Guinea, and a tall Suque fern figure from Vanuatu. A Dayak beaded baby carrier from Borneo is covered in glass trade beads, and a finely carved Massim lime spatula comes from the Massim region of Papua New Guinea.

The group also includes a Tibetan Buddhist brocade hanging, a Thai bronze Kinnari guardian figure, and a pair of butterfly wing collages by Alpheus Bonga.

Every one of these has a story, and the catalog descriptions are worth a read before you bid.

There is a lot of everyday American history in Estate Treasures 87, and some of it has real presence.

A pair of 1830s schoolgirl samplers, silk on linen, sit alongside a 1918 Plains ledger art drawing by Ballard Red Dog. There is a beaded chanupa pipe bag, a Knights of Pythias lodge banner from Washington, New Jersey, and a ceremonial Ark of the Covenant made for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Then come the workhorses: a Prairie State egg incubator from Homer City, Pennsylvania, a Singer treadle sewing machine in its cabinet, and a C.S. Bell farm bell from Hillsboro, Ohio. A Swedish wedding box with iron strapwork and a decorative chair with a Watson's Matchless Cleanser advertising panel round things out.

Which one has the best story? We have a guess, but we want to hear yours.

Jazz fans, this one is for you. Estate Treasures 87 includes a collection of original vintage gelatin silver photographs from the New York jazz world of the 1950s and early 1960s.

The photographers include Hugh Bell, Jerry Dantzic, Steve Schapiro, Ronnie Brathwaite, Al Fairweather, and Francis Wolff, the co founder of Blue Note Records. The subjects include Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Lester Young, Philly Joe Jones, Thad Jones, and Billy Strayhorn, plus a Blue Note drummer photographed from inside the kit.

Several of these are signed or stamped by the photographers. They are vintage prints and they show their age, which is a big part of the charm.

Art glass is one of the big stories in Estate Treasures 87, and the studio work from the 1970s and early 1980s is the part we keep going back to.

There are Josh Simpson vases with decoration worked inside the glass, a swirled opalescent vase by Mark Peiser from 1973, an iridescent Orient & Flume vase from Chico, California, and a tiny dragonfly vase by Lundberg Studios of Davenport, California. Charles Lotton is well represented too, including a trio of early vases from the 1970s and single pieces in blue and red iridescence.

Beyond the studio glass, there is a cranberry glass pickle castor by Meriden Britannia in its silver plated frame and a cobalt cut to clear crystal ice bucket from Ajka in Hungary.

Most of the studio pieces are small enough to hold in one hand and bold enough to fill a shelf.

Some pieces are best seen with the light behind them, and the Asian antiques in Estate Treasures 87 are full of those.

There is a carved red coral Guanyin, a carved green hardstone Guanyin, and a tall standing Bodhisattva attributed to the late Qing or Republic period. On the porcelain side, look for a pair of Canton Famille Rose vases, a tall Famille Rose vase with cranes in clouds, a deep cobalt sacrificial blue jilan vase, and a large Jingdezhen blue and white figure of Fu Xing, the Star God of blessings.

A pair of Koshida Satsuma vases from Japan bring early 20th century enamel and gilt to the group. Two Korean celadon pieces, a maebyeong vase and a double gourd ewer, both carry cranes and clouds under that soft green glaze.

Estate Treasures 87 has a deep run of fine art, and it covers a lot of ground.

American Impressionist landscapes lead the way, with an oil by Louis Oscar Griffith and a painting attributed to John William Vawter, both from the Brown County, Indiana art colony tradition, plus a signed Spring Morning by Alfred R. Mitchell.

Then it gets more playful. Joseph De Martini's barbershop scene, painted around 1950, is one of those pictures you keep looking at. There are limited edition prints after Norman Rockwell and Salvador Dali, two bright 1973 pieces by Peter Max, a Jane Wooster Scott folk art scene, and a quiet platinum print by Tomio Seike.

Eighty years ago, Fernando Amorsolo gave a painting to the American Army surgeon who helped his wife during World War II. That single act of gratitude kept two of his works safe with one Hampton Roads family for three generations.

On September 12, Planting Rice and The Tinikling Dance finally went home. The two paintings sold for a combined PHP 54.9 million ($889,700 USD), more than double their combined high estimate. The Tinikling Dance alone brought PHP 38.5 million (about $624,700 USD) and closed as the top lot of the entire sale.

Some stories are worth the wait.

Some stories come full circle.

In 1945 and 1947, Fernando Amorsolo painted Planting Rice and The Tinikling Dance. According to family history, one of these works was given as a gift of gratitude, tied to a story about a relative who helpedone of Amorsolo's own wives during WWII. The family has held onto both paintings ever since. Neither has ever been offered at auction, until now.

Blue Box Auction Gallery is partnering with Salcedo Auctions in Manila to close that loop. These two paintings are returning to the Philippines to find their next home, bringing Amorsolo's work back to the place that inspired it. You'll find them as lot #29 and lot #50 in Salcedo's The Well-Appointed Life sale, live September 12 at 10am PHT (September 11 at 10pm ET).

This is the only chance to be part of that story.
