Dry gas wells look different on the chromatograph than oil wells, operate at extreme depth and heat, and demand different interpretation skills from mudloggers and geosteerers. Gas-directed drilling in the Haynesville puts wellbores at 15,000 to 19,000 feet with 380°F temperatures and subtle formation boundaries that reward experience in those specific conditions.

Dry gas wells demand different interpretation skills than oil plays, and the chromatograph tells you that from the first foot.

For the first time in over two decades, Argentina's natural gas production is hitting record levels.

Vaca Mu**ta now accounts for 65% of the country's gas output, and the formation is estimated to be only 10% developed. The Neuquén Basin posted a 30% year-over-year production increase as recently as early 2026.

The gas isn't staying in Argentina. Countries across South America are building pipeline infrastructure to receive it:

→ Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay are pursuing routes to carry Argentine gas north to Brazil

→ Brazil is reducing dependence on Bolivian supply as production declines

→ Colombia is facing a domestic gas shortfall and looking to regional supply

→ Chile already receives Argentine gas exports, with volumes growing as output climbs

The infrastructure is being built now, and the production base feeding it is growing well ahead of expectations.

What strong gas programs build their foundation on: formation evaluation that understands how rock properties change along the lateral, real-time geochemical analysis, geosteering that keeps wellbores in productive intervals, and porosity analysis that reveals heterogeneity across stages.

The programs being built right now are writing the playbook for how South America develops over the next decade.

Vaca Mu**ta is hitting record gas production levels, and the infrastructure to move it across South America is being built now.

From formation interpretation to offset analysis, geosteering is one of the most technically demanding roles in the field. This is what MCWL brings to every well.

The chromatograph on a Haynesville gas well doesn't look like what most mudloggers are used to seeing. The C2 through C5 components that anchor oil play interpretation are largely gone, formation boundaries are subtler, and the depth and pressure conditions change how everything coming back to the surface needs to be read.

This post breaks down what actually shifts when you move into a gas-directed program, from how dry gas compresses the chromatograph signal to what geosteering demands when the target interval is narrow and the conditions are unforgiving. Worth reading before the next program spuds.

Dry gas wells demand different interpretation skills than oil plays, and the chromatograph tells you that from the first foot.

Argentina just hit natural gas production levels it hasn't seen in over twenty years, and Vaca Mu**ta is only about 10% developed. The formation is already reshaping the region's energy map, with Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, and Chile all positioning around the supply coming out of the Neuquén Basin.

This blog looks at what's driving that momentum, where the rest of the region fits into the story, and what the subsurface science behind strong gas programs actually looks like in practice.

Vaca Mu**ta is hitting record gas production levels, and the infrastructure to move it across South America is being built now.
