Wright-Patterson AFB sustains damage from suspected tornado. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force’s Restoration Hangar 4, Gate 22B (I-675 Gate) and several other buildings on WPAFB's Area B sustained damage after a suspected early-morning tornado touched down today, Feb 28.

The 88th Civil Engineer Group, first responders and base safety personnel are assessing damage throughout the base.

“Our initial assessment from this morning’s storm is the damage is isolated to the southern side of Area B. Our initial focus right now is on safety and damage assessment. I can’t speak highly enough about our security forces, Fire Department and civil engineer Airmen for their quick response and hard work to assess damage and determine a path forward for restoring operations as quickly as possible.”
-- Col. Travis Pond, 88th Air Base Wing and installation commander

Congratulations to Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt and our friends at the First Americans Museum on their grand opening this weekend!

The young French nobleman was walking down the streets of Paris in 1780 when a rose fell at his feet. He looked up to see a beautiful woman in the window above. It was Tae-Gle-Ha, or Laughing Buffalo, of the Omaha tribe. She had spent the previous year in Paris, but returned to America the very next day. The young man followed and spent the next ten years searching America for her. Within two weeks of finally finding her, they were married.

In 2018, Laughing Buffalo’s great-great-great-great grandson became the first Native American Mayor of Oklahoma City.

Leonard Fuller was born in 1911, attended an Osage school and graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1928, at the height of the Reign of Terror. Leonard’s great-great-grandmother was known only through written records as “an Indian woman of the Osage Nation,” leading to his status as a registered member of that tribe. Known to his non-Native family members as “Uncle Chief,” Leonard (pictured below) would spend three decades in the United States Army and retire as a Colonel. He would pass away at age 96 in Oklahoma City, in the care of his grandson and granddaughter-in-law.

On Saturday morning, Col. Fuller’s grandson - now the Mayor of Oklahoma City, descendant of Osage and Omaha, French and English - will stand with men and women of equally complicated heritage, to open perhaps the world’s greatest center of Native and Indigenous history and culture.

It took 129 years for a registered member of a tribal nation to be elected Mayor of Oklahoma City. It took a bit longer to open the First Americans Museum, but these two moments have now aligned. As a proud son of Oklahoma City and of the Osage Nation, it will forever be one of my greatest honors that they did. I can’t wait for morning to come.

A fascinating look at one of the most unique vessels afloat today

One of the most unique vessels serving in the Coast Guard Auxiliary today, the Surface Facility “Naval War College” is a literal floating piece of American military history. As the name suggests, the aptly named “Naval War College” began its service life as a U.S. Navy Command Cutter (offici...

On this day in history, June 30th, 1688, following decades of war, the British Parliament with the support of their countrymen led the Glorious Revolution. Finally fulfilling the original promise of Magna Carta, Parliament deposed King James II and extended an invitation to his daughter, Mary, to take the throne of England. This historic revolution led to both a bill of rights and the creation of a new form of government, the constitutional monarchy, under which the UK still operates today.
