Today, August 7 is National Purple Heart Day. It is a day dedicated to paying our respects to all the brave men and women wounded or killed in combat.

This day is commemorating the historic day in 1782 that General George Washington, Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army, commissioned the first Purple Heart Medal, originally called the Badge of Military Merit.

The Badge of Military Merit is a purple, heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver with the word merit embroidered in silver across the face. Only 3 Badges of Military Merit were awarded. The Badge of Military Merit was redesigned and re-commissioned in 1932 by General Douglas McArthur in honor of George Washington’s bicentennial birthday. Now known as the Purple Heart Medal – it is the oldest military award, first being awarded to soldiers in World War I and still given to soldiers today.

Oklahoma State Employee Fired for Advocating for Disabled and Children’s Rights

Oklahoma City, OK — A state employee and advocate for the disabled and children’s rights claims she was fired in retaliation for exposing corruption and systemic neglect within Oklahoma’s state agencies. The woman, who worked as a Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS) case manager, says she has recorded conversations with state officials warning her she would be fired for her advocacy efforts.

The employee alleges her termination came after raising concerns about abuse and neglect at facilities contracted by the state, including those managed by Liberty of Oklahoma Corporation. Despite evidence of misconduct, the state continues to contract with Liberty to complete DDS intakes. Many individuals with disabilities are outraged, likening the situation to “having a pe*****le run a daycare.”

In addition to warning her termination was imminent, state officials allegedly attempted to deny her paid time off, preventing her from speaking at the Oklahoma Capitol to raise awareness about systemic failures.

“This is what happens in Oklahoma when you expose corruption,” she said. “Instead of addressing the issues, they silence the people fighting for change.”

The former employee is now consulting legal counsel, with recordings of these conversations serving as evidence of retaliation. Advocacy groups are calling for an investigation into her claims, citing her case as part of a troubling pattern of punishing whistleblowers in Oklahoma.

Despite her firing, the woman vows to continue advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves. “The truth will come out, and I won’t stop fighting for justice.”
