The anatomy of a Herkimer pocket is pure strategy.

🛠️✨If you’re new to digging in Herkimer, NY, it is easy to get tricked by a “horseshoe.” They almost always look like an empty orphan pocket with a lonely calcite cluster at the back.

But don’t pack up your tools just yet.

The trick is to punch carefully through the back wall. These systems snake horizontally. Once you track the direction of the flow, you unlock the key to opening the adjacent pockets without damaging the crystals inside. ⛏️💎

Tag your digging partner who needs to see this before your next trip!
