We are honored to win the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments 2026 Climate and Energy Leadership Award for our campaign to enroll low- and moderate-income D.C. residents in community solar.
What does that look like? Four small community solar farms offering hundreds of low-income households a 50% discount on solar credits. Over the project’s 25-year life, that adds up to nearly $2 million in subscriber savings and $300,000 in building cost savings. The discount exists because our nonprofit partner and subscriber, Enterprise Community Development (the owner of the projects), did something remarkable: it gave up its 30% tax credit so income-qualified residents could save more.
Even with major savings on the table, we knew it would be hard to earn trust because too many lower-income residents have been burned by predatory energy practices. So our incredible program managers, Natalia Franco and Sam Knight, went to them with lunch-and-learns, community days, coffee hours, Spanish-language flyers, and a Spanish speaker at the table. We sat with residents, read their bills together, and explained the savings one conversation at a time.
Thank you to Enterprise for its commitment to energy equity, to the property managers who championed this, to our dedicated team members, and to every resident who subscribed to support local solar.
