There's a difference between a fire alarm and a monitored fire alarm system that most business owners don't fully appreciate β€” until they need to.
A standard alarm makes noise. It alerts whoever happens to be nearby. In a building that's occupied, that might be enough. But commercial buildings are unoccupied 50 to 75% of the time. During those hours, an unmonitored system can delay emergency response by 10 to 60 minutes or more.
ProTech Security learned this firsthand when we lost a building to fire on January 4, 2026. Our professionally monitored system triggered an alert immediately β€” no one needed to be present, no one needed to notice smoke from a window. Emergency services were dispatched within seconds of activation.
According to the NFPA, 95% of direct property damage occurs after a fire has progressed beyond its early stages. The gap between detection and dispatch is where that progression happens. Monitoring closes that gap.
We wrote about what we experienced, what we learned, and what every business owner should know about fire preparedness. It's the most important thing we've published in a long time.

πŸ’‘ Security Tip of the Week: Know How Long Your Footage Actually Lasts
🎞️ Here's a question worth answering before you need the answer: if something happened six weeks ago and you found out about it today, would the video still exist?
Most facility managers assume their retention window is longer than it is. Storage fills up. Cameras get added to a system that was sized for fewer of them. Higher resolution consumes capacity faster than the original configuration accounted for. And systems overwrite the oldest footage automatically β€” quietly, without telling anyone.
The trouble is that you rarely discover a retention shortfall at a convenient moment. You discover it when an employee reports something from last month, when an insurance claim requires documentation, or when law enforcement asks for a specific date.
So find out now. Check your actual retention window, not the one on the original quote. Then ask whether it matches how you'd realistically need to use the footage. Thirty days is common. It's also shorter than the timeline on a lot of workplace incidents, theft discoveries, and liability claims.
If the number surprises you, that's a storage conversation worth having before it becomes an evidence problem.

πŸ” Featured Product Friday: Mass Notification Systems
When something goes wrong in a facility, there's almost always a gap between the moment security knows and the moment everyone else does. That gap is where confusion lives β€” people moving toward a threat instead of away from it, staff waiting on direction that hasn't come, nobody certain whether the situation is real.
Mass notification systems close that gap.
One command reaches every person on the property at once β€” through overhead speakers, desk phones, mobile devices, digital displays, and outdoor units simultaneously. Fire evacuation. Severe weather. Lockdown. Medical emergency. The message arrives everywhere at the same time, with instructions specific enough to act on.
For schools, government facilities, healthcare campuses, and large commercial properties, that coordination isn't a convenience feature. In the first few minutes of an incident, it's frequently the thing that determines the outcome.
ProTech Security designs and integrates mass notification that connects directly to your existing fire detection, access control, and security infrastructure β€” so notification isn't a separate step someone has to remember to take under pressure. It happens as part of the response.
If your emergency plan depends on someone making phone calls, it's worth a second look.

πŸ’‘ Security Tip of the Week: Your Emergency Protocols Are Only as Good as Your Team's Knowledge of Them
🚨 A lot of businesses have emergency protocols. Fewer have teams that know them well enough to execute under pressure.
There's a meaningful difference between a document that lives in a binder and a plan that's been walked through, discussed, and practiced. When something actually happens β€” a fire, an intrusion, a medical emergency β€” the people in your building don't have time to look anything up. They need to already know what to do.
This week's tip is simple but worth acting on: gather your team and walk through your emergency response protocols out loud. Who does what? Where do people go? Who makes the call to contact authorities? What does the communication chain looks like in the first 10 minutes?
If that conversation reveals gaps β€” missing procedures, unclear responsibilities, systems that don't coordinate the way they should β€” those are the gaps to close now, not during an incident.
Technology handles a lot. The human layer still matters enormously.

πŸ” Featured Product Friday: Integrated Security Systems
Most commercial facilities don't have a security system. They have several security systems that happen to share a building.
Access control on one platform. Video surveillance on another. Intrusion detection is managed separately. Fire alarms on a third contract. None of them are talking to each other, and someone on your team is manually connecting the dots when something happens.
That's not a security strategy. That's a collection of tools with gaps between them β€” and gaps are exactly where incidents escalate.
ProTech Security's integrated security systems bring every component onto a single, unified platform. When access control detects an unauthorized entry, cameras pivot automatically. Monitoring is alerted instantly. Response protocols activate without waiting for a phone call. The entire system responds as one β€” because it is one.
One dashboard. One partner. Complete visibility. That's what integration actually means in practice.
What would a coordinated response to a security event look like in your facility right now?
