Nutrition plays a vital role in the health, wellness, and performance of first responders. While there are many ways to improve our diets, the attached video highlights a few simple and effective strategies:
🥗 Watch Your Portions – A good guideline is to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, one-quarter with lean protein, and one-quarter with whole grains.
⚠️ Limit Added Sodium and Sugars – Reducing foods high in added salt and sugar can support heart health, energy levels, and overall well-being.
🥚 Don't Overlook Eggs – Eggs are an excellent source of protein and can be incorporated into healthy meals in many ways, including lunches, fried rice, salads, and more.
Small nutrition changes can make a big difference in maintaining the health and readiness needed to serve our communities every day.

Technique

Physical fitness is an important part of being a firefighter, but simply going through the motions isn’t enough. How we move is just as important as how often we exercise, which is why proper technique is so critical.

Whether in the gym or on the fireground, maintaining proper form should always be a priority. Focusing on correct lifting techniques, performing exercises that translate to real-world job tasks, and avoiding movements that increase the risk of injury can help reduce preventable injuries and keep firefighters healthy and ready to serve.

By emphasizing proper technique in both training and daily operations, we can improve performance, enhance safety, and build long-term resilience for the demands of the job.

Intentional
Being intentional with your fitness is what separates simply exercising from training to perform at a high level as a firefighter.
A key part of intentional training is creating a schedule and sticking to it. But once you have a routine in place, how can you make it more effective?
Rather than focusing solely on individual muscles, firefighters should train the movements they perform on the fireground. Building a program around functional movement patterns can improve strength, performance, and resilience while reducing the risk of injury.
Key movement patterns for firefighters include:
🔥 Squat
🔥 Pull
🔥 Lift
🔥 Push
🔥 Core
🔥 Carry
The article below discusses how to build a training program around these essential movements and why training movements—not just muscles—can better prepare firefighters for the demands of the job.

Instead of picking a set of muscles to train on particular days, pick exercises that fit into these main movement patterns that mimic on the job tasks.

Foundations of Firefighter Fitness

Functional fitness should be a key focus for firefighters and EMS personnel because the physical demands of the job often go far beyond what traditional workout routines prepare us for.
Two critical components of functional fitness are core strength and flexibility. Firefighting and EMS tasks frequently require awkward positions, unpredictable movements, lifting, carrying, and working in confined spaces. Developing a strong core and maintaining flexibility can help improve performance while reducing the risk of injury.
Ways to improve these areas include:
✅ Engage your core during daily activities and workouts whenever possible.
✅ Incorporate 10–30 minutes of core-strengthening exercises several times per week.
✅ After conditioning or workout sessions, perform static stretching for the muscle groups you used.
Investing time in functional fitness today can help keep you stronger, safer, and more effective on the job tomorrow.

Some follow-up to the graduation ceremony. After graduation EMS providers have a to take a National Registry Test to confirm their competency for the level they trained for, which is no small task. And we are beyond excited that both have officially passed that National Registry Test and are officially licensed paramedics.
Congrats again you two! 🫡

This is great news for our area!

We’re excited to share that Flight For Life and ThedaStar have officially come together as one unified air medical transport program—bringing together two trusted teams with one shared mission: delivering safe, high-quality, life-saving care when it matters most.

By combining our experience, expertise, and resources, this integration will:

*Expand access to air medical transport across the region
*Improve coordination and aircraft availability
*Reduce delays and response times
*Strengthen service for patients, EMS, hospitals, and communities

Together, our two programs bring decades of experience—serving tens of thousands of patients across Wisconsin—and are now even better positioned to meet the growing needs of the communities we serve.

Most importantly, there is no disruption to service. Both Flight For Life and ThedaStar will continue operating under their trusted names, and our partners in health care can use the same dispatch numbers you rely on today.

This is about growth, collaboration, and ensuring more patients receive the critical care they need—when and where they need it most.

Thank you to our partners, crews, and communities for your continued trust and support.
