This week, Destination North Myrtle Beach was joined by board members, elected and public officials, and volunteers from across the community to plant the oyster shells from the Oyster Roast for the Coast event held at Boardwalk Billy's in February. Partnering with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources SCORE Program the oyster shells were planted in Dunne Sound near Cherry Grove. SCORE, which stands for South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement, focuses on recycling oyster shells and returning them to local waterways where they can continue supporting our coastal ecosystem. 🌊
Together, volunteers helped place 50 Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWRs) to create structure for new oyster growth. These baskets provide a stable base for oyster larvae to attach and develop into living reef habitat. These 50 MWRs support more than 350,000 oysters and will filter an estimated to 17.5 million gallons of water every day.
Oyster shell recycling and replanting helps:
🦪Create habitat for new oyster larvae
💧Improve water quality by naturally filtering sediment
🌱Reduce shoreline erosion
🐟Support a healthier coastal ecosystem and marine life
A huge thank you to everyone who came out to help, get a little muddy, and support the project. These efforts would not be possible without volunteers and community partners who care deeply about protecting the place we call home.👏
