Great defenders understand that defense isn’t about using one movement pattern, but about knowing when to switch movement patterns.
As a defender, relying on the shuffle for every situation can get you into trouble.
The shuffle is effective when you have time and space to control the matchup. But when the offensive player creates separation or attacks with speed, continuing to shuffle may leave you trailing the play.
That’s when you need to transition into a Lateral Run Pattern.
The Lateral Run allows you to cover more ground, match the offensive player’s speed, and reposition yourself to stay in front rather than getting beat to the spot.
The better you become at transitioning between a shuffle and a Lateral Run, the better chance you have of keeping the ball in front of you.
