☀️ Florida Appliance Tip: Indoor Ice Machines & Refrigerators Don’t Belong Outdoors
We see this more often than you might think:
Someone installs an indoor-rated under-counter refrigerator or ice machine in an outdoor kitchen, covered patio, lanai, or pool area because it physically fits the space.
The problem?
Just because an appliance fits outdoors doesn’t mean it’s designed to LIVE outdoors.
Florida’s heat and humidity can be especially hard on refrigeration equipment.
🔥 Florida heat makes refrigeration equipment work harder.
When the surrounding temperature is high, a refrigerator or ice machine has to work harder to remove heat and maintain the temperatures it’s designed to reach. That can mean longer run times and additional stress on the system.
💧 Florida humidity creates another problem — corrosion.
High humidity and moisture can contribute to corrosion of components, electrical connections, tubing, fasteners and other metal parts that weren’t designed for outdoor exposure.
🧊 Ice machines can be particularly vulnerable.
An ice machine already has to remove heat from the water and surrounding environment. Put an indoor-rated machine in a hot, humid outdoor space and you’re asking equipment designed for controlled indoor conditions to operate in a much harsher environment.
🥶 Under-counter refrigerators have the same issue.
That little refrigerator may look perfect under your outdoor counter, but if it isn’t specifically designed and rated for outdoor use, Florida’s environment can shorten its service life and lead to performance and repair problems.
Before you install one outdoors…
Check the manufacturer’s specifications.
Look specifically for an appliance that is designed and rated for outdoor use and make sure the installation requirements are followed.
And remember: “covered” doesn’t automatically mean “outdoor rated.”
A screened-in lanai, covered patio or outdoor kitchen can still experience extreme heat and humidity.
