Wasatch Resource Recovery is Utah’s first and only anaerobic digestion facility dedicated to food waste diversion. The facility will accept several types of organic material including food scraps, food manufacturing waste, and expired food and beverages from along the Wasatch front. Once commercially operational in the fall of 2018, the facility will divert these waste streams away from the overfi

lled landfills where they release dangerous greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Through the process of anaerobic digestion, greenhouse gasses will be captured and converted into clean, renewable natural gas. Additionally, a carbon-rich soil amendment will be produced to provide much-needed nutrients and carbon back into our soils. Wasatch Resource Recovery, located in North Salt Lake, is a public-private partnership between ALPRO Energy & Water and South Davis Sewer District.

What are separated source organics (SSO)? They are anything you eat on your plate!

We receive tons a month of SSO from grocery stores, restaurants and households. We then grind the food up and send it over with secondary water to the digesters, which in turn creates renewable natural gas and a bio fertilizer!

We want your food waste, however we cannot have messy bins or people putting garbage in the bins (styrofoam, plastics, cardboard). If this continues, we will have to consider removing the public drop off. If you have any questions, please call 801-266-9161. Thank you all for your efforts in diverting food waste, and we hope we can keep this area clean and contamination out of the food waste bins moving forward.
