Today is Endangered Species Day.

At Goddard Consulting, our work regularly involves identifying, documenting, and helping protect habitat for rare and state-listed species throughout Massachusetts.

From plants to insects to reptiles, thoughtful environmental planning plays an important role in balancing development with long-term ecological conservation.

Vernal pool season is still going strong in Massachusetts.

These seasonal wetlands provide critical breeding habitat for species like wood frogs, spotted salamanders, and fairy shrimp, all of which rely on fish-free conditions to complete their life cycles.

If you suspect you may have a vernal pool on your property, early identification is key. Confirming and documenting these resources now can help avoid unexpected permitting requirements and project delays later in the year.

Our team can help guide you through the process—reach out to plan ahead.

It’s almost turtle season!

In Massachusetts, the turtle active season extends from April 15 through October 15.

During this time, projects located within mapped Priority Habitat for rare turtles or other reptiles may require the development and implementation of a Turtle Protection Plan to avoid impacts to species such as the Eastern Box Turtle.

Understanding these seasonal constraints early in project planning is critical to maintaining compliance and avoiding project delays.

If your property supports rare reptiles and you are planning work within the next year, early coordination can help streamline the permitting process. Reach out to our wildlife team today.

Here’s a snapshot of this week’s vernal pool activity!

We’re out in the field conducting vernal pool assessments—counting egg masses, searching for fairy shrimp, and documenting other critters along the way to support ecological permitting and vernal pool certification.

Completing this work during vernal pool season is critical to avoiding project delays. If you suspect you have a vernal pool on your property, reach out to our team to schedule a site visit!

Today we highlight the importance of protecting wildlife and conserving habitat across New England.

From vernal pools to rare species habitat to regulated wetlands, many wildlife resources are protected under state and local regulations. Successful projects begin with early habitat identification, ecological evaluation, and coordinated permitting.

Goddard Consulting’s Wildlife Team specializes in the following services:
* Wildlife Habitat Evaluations
* Rare Species Habitat Assessments
* Vernal Pool Assessments
* Turtle Protection Plans
* Rare Flora and Fauna Surveys
* Environmental Permitting & Regulatory Coordination

Goddard ensures the long-term protection of critical habitats through responsible permitting.

All species depicted were handled for scientific or protective purposes in accordance with applicable scientific collection permits and regulatory authorizations.

Spring vernal pool season is rapidly approaching!

If you own property with a low-lying area that fills with water in the spring, it may be a vernal pool — a temporary, shallow body of water that typically dries by late summer, preventing fish from establishing and providing critical, predator-free breeding habitat for specialized species like spotted salamanders and wood frogs.

Local Conservation Commissions may request vernal pool assessments before approving applications. These evaluations can only be completed during the active breeding season (March through June), so early review can help prevent permitting delays later in the year.

Contact us now if you need a vernal pool site assessment!
