Mike has an ebook out. A collection of his columns that ran on Sundays in the Chicago Tribune. If you don't have a Kindle, it's Nook-able, and on I-Tunes, too.

A collection of 64 literary tidbits about such diverse subjects as poisonous fish, s*x habits of chimps, why dogs like skunks, father-son relationships, silliness of escargot, Teddy Roosevelt’s jungle prowess and other odd topics that take a minute to read...

The ad business likes initials. There was a time when JWT ruled. FCB is still half there. We admired K&E, O&M, BBDO, Y&R, Euro RSCG (formerly TLK; they did P&G), ETC. …OK. BTW, these shops are mostly MIA. Why? You don’t need an MBA: It’s written below. (As DDB once said for VW: Think small.)

It's Bruce Springsteen’s birthday. "The boss.” He once said: “You write the song just for yourself, but it’s no good unless you play it for somebody else.” He got that right. We compose these posts because we like ‘em. Someday, we hope to have more than 47 reading them. Meanwhile, thanks for being in this cool group.

The eclectic website "Two-Fisted Birdwatcher" has a riff about how things change when you're not looking. Like everything on this site, it’s partly about birds, partly about something more. Something everyone can relate to. Especially if you’re in advertising…

Last month, we mentioned the company president who writes a blog worth reading and said he was upbeat. He was. But now he's sore. Sore at eyesores. For good reason. If certain feet-draggers listened to this guy, many economic problems would clear up. Take a look...

Suburban meetings mean car time. Colleagues say they use it for phone work. Audio books can be better. A drive around the burbs is educational if you’re listening to “Unbroken,” by Laura Hillenbrand, or “S*x on the Moon” by Ben Mezrich. After years of driving to ad meetings, you’ll have learned things you wouldn’t otherwise know. Deal with phone calls later. When you do, you’ll be a little smarter.

Thad Roberts, a fellow in a prestigious NASA program had an idea—a romantic, albeit crazy, idea. He wanted to give his girlfriend the moon. Literally. Thad convinced his girlfriend and another female accomplice, both NASA interns, to break into an impregnable laboratory at NASA—past security checkp...

Between last week's meetings in NYC, we saw 2 plays that said a lot about each other without realizing it. A profane Tony winner based on South Park satire...and a Tony-winning revival of a '34 Broadway classic. Couldn’t be further apart? Wrong. In theater, as in advertising, big ideas have one thing in common: anything goes.

Upbeat beats up downbeat. We know a company president who writes a blog that’s actually worth reading. He’s in real estate, so times have been tough. But the man thinks positive. As a result, he’s busy. A good guy to read. We’d suggest you click this link, even if he weren’t a longtime client and good friend. See what you think…

An economist writes: “There are issues to worry about. The U.S. debt, the stability of Europe, the ability of the Chinese to tame inflation. (But) in challenging times, opportunities are found because companies project fears into the future.” Who is this guy? Doesn’t matter. We’re paraphrasing him. What does his insight have to do with us—and you? Simple. What used to cost a lot…doesn’t any more.

Recent story in Crain’s: S.C. Johnson pulls its whole $B acct from DraftFCB after 60 yrs. This move reinforces the cliché about ad people & nervous stomachs. We think good clients work things out, and never need to show the door to old friends. Meanwhile, a round of firing & hiring begins, essentially a game of musical chairs with Johnson probably meeting familiar faces some day soon in its new shops.

I-tunes plays music as we work. We select classical, and find 152 streams. Confusing. But one has a bold sigma in its name. When we scroll, it jumps out. We have no idea why Sky FM put it there. But we find it quickly. Standing apart in a crowd is...helpful. It’s what our clients do. Of course, after you stand out, you have to deliver. Sky FM does. Our clients do, too. Or they wouldn’t be our clients.

“Moustache,” cont. from 7/15. To recap: At our pre-production meet, the star has an unexpected moustache. We politely suggest a shave, but the guy says no. We take a chance & say we'll reschedule. (A bluff; client would’ve freaked). Next meeting: our guy’s smiling, sans moustache. A face-saving move, for us all. You love his TV series and films. You’d love him, too. Great guy. And the spot won a Clio.
