All six of these owl species can be found in Maine, but they have vastly different statuses in the state. While some are incredibly common year-round residents, others are exceptionally rare visitors.

Year-Round Common Residents
Great Horned Owl: One of Maine's most common and powerful avian predators, found throughout the state year-round.
Barred Owl: Highly common across Maine. They are famous for their distinct "Who cooks for you?" call.
Northern Saw-Whet Owl: Maine's smallest common resident owl. They are highly secretive cavity nesters.

Year-Round But Less Common
Eastern Screech-Owl: A permanent resident but mostly confined to the southern regions of Maine. They are less frequently seen in northern parts of the state.

Exceptionally Rare Visitors
Great Gray Owl: They do not breed in Maine. They are rare winter visitors that occasionally fly south into New England (an event called an "irruption") when food supplies crash in Canada.
Barn Owl: Extremely rare in Maine, sitting at the absolute northern edge of their typical North American range

Getting the skidway ready. Just wide enough to get the Boomer betweem the ramps. Some of the logs are to big for me to roll with the cant hook. Its got to be level enough so the cant doesn't keep rolling when you get it on the deck . To 4 foot removeable ramps at the end . Plenty of chock blocks around. I usually lay a log down stopping the front wheels so I don't hit the sawmill with the forks

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Forest Service is asking residents, landowners, and municipalities to help slow the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB), a destructive insect responsible for killing millions of ash trees across North America.

As the EAB continues to threaten Maine’s forests and communities, the Maine Forest Service encourages the public to learn how to identify ash trees and signs of infestation, participate in monitoring efforts, and help prevent the spread of invasive pests.

Here are five ways to help slow EAB:
1) Learn how to identify ash trees
2) Learn how to identify signs of EAB
3) Learn how to identify the EAB
4) Create a girdled ash tree to monitor for EAB
5) Leave your firewood at home and prevent the spread of invasive pests

These five steps, along with many other helpful resources, are accessible at https://www.maine.gov/dacf/mfs/forest_health/invasive_threats/eab/EABsigns.shtml.
