When the alarm rang out last night for a fire, Norton Fire’s Engine 44 crew was already committed to a medical call. Chartley Station’s 3 firefighters “cross-man” Rescue 42; meaning they take the correct truck to whichever emergency needs them first.
Our Rescue 41 crew, which “cross-mans” Ladder 49 out of headquarters, was also at the hospital. Engine 45 out of headquarters, which would normally be the second due engine for the district, arrived first and extinguished the fire with just the help of the shift commander.
Additional help was coming from our mutual aid partners but with additional travel time. We want to reiterate that Engine 45, staffed with two firefighters, and the shift commander were alone on scene for the first 7 minutes. 3 total firefighters fighting fire alone for that long falls way under any semblance of a standard and is dangerous to both the public and our members. Calls like these illustrate thin staffing spread thinner.
To the owners and staff at Mike and Lenny's, our hearts are with you during this difficult time. Norton is a community that stands together, and we wish you strength as you navigate the road ahead.
To our mutual aid companies, as always, thank you for your assistance.
