It was a beautiful day for the inaugural tree planting and dedication of the Allie Mae Dickens Community Orchard in Kansas City, Kansas. The orchard, named in honor of a local volunteer, is part of an effort to grow an equitable and sustainable local food system for local residents.

Two Congolese refugees who are recent graduates from the four-year New Roots for Refugees program and have backgrounds in agriculture will produce food to sell in their community and at farmers markets. The orchard also is an educational space that will provide fresh produce to the neighborhood.

Our Shirley Galarza Epstein and {{linkedin_mention(urn:li:person:3LLm_hvHaQ|Christina Kampson)}} joined Cultivate KC, Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, Groundwork Northeast Revitalization Group (Groundwork NRG), New Roots for Refugees, The Giving Grove and K-Jett Services for the event..

Need for a water connection at the orchard was brought to the attention of the HomeServe Cares Foundation by Kenny Watowa, owner of K Jett, one of HomeServe’s network contractors. We were happy to work with Kenny and these great organizations on this project.

The city of El Paso, Texas, was receiving phone calls from homeowners experiencing water leaks and residential line issues. The city received so many, in fact, that El Paso decided to extend its partnership with HomeServe to include the ServLine Leak Protection Program along with its existing NLC Service Line Warranty Program.

Our ServLine Leak Protection Program offers protection to utilities from bad debt while improving customer satisfaction, and protects their customers from an unexpectedly high water bill because of a water leak on their side of the meter.

Warmer weather means gardening, and those who answered a recent HomeServe poll said that they were looking to reduce their grocery bill through their garden. Twenty-two percent said they had previously planted fruits and vegetables to save money, another 23% said they planned a garden this year and 5% had done so in the past but didn’t plan to continue.

In 2022, the cost of food increased by 9.9%, and the cost of “food-at-home,” or the meals we prepare for ourselves, increased by 11.4%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Americans spend an average of $438 monthly for food-at-home, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average cost to establish a vegetable garden is $238, which provides veggies worth an average of $677, more than 280% of the startup cost, according to the Journal of Extension. What does more than $600 worth of vegetables look like? Like more than 300 pounds of produce.
