Warmer weather means gardening, and those who answered a recent HomeServe poll said that they were looking to reduce their grocery bill through their garden. Twenty-two percent said they had previously planted fruits and vegetables to save money, another 23% said they planned a garden this year and 5% had done so in the past but didn’t plan to continue.
In 2022, the cost of food increased by 9.9%, and the cost of “food-at-home,” or the meals we prepare for ourselves, increased by 11.4%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Americans spend an average of $438 monthly for food-at-home, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average cost to establish a vegetable garden is $238, which provides veggies worth an average of $677, more than 280% of the startup cost, according to the Journal of Extension. What does more than $600 worth of vegetables look like? Like more than 300 pounds of produce.
