Getting your first sale is hard.
Not because Shopify is hard to set up. It’s because until someone actually buys, almost everything you’re doing is still a guess.
When I started That’s My Pup, I was trying to sell custom dog figurines and dog-art apparel at the same time.
Two offers. Two buying paths. No customers.
So I cut the apparel and focused on one thing.
One product. One flow. One problem to solve.
Then I started testing everything around it.
Landing pages vs homepage. Different offers. Discount codes. Different ways of introducing the product.
What finally started working wasn’t pushing the figurine harder.
It was talking about the reason someone would want one in the first place.
Loving a dog. Losing one. Wanting something that reminds you of them.
Sometimes the product barely showed up until the end of the video.
Then someone messaged me with a few questions.
I answered.
A few minutes later they told me they had just ordered.
Customer 1.
That sale mattered because now I had something better than guesses.
I had a real customer to learn from.
If you’re starting your own store, my biggest takeaway so far is simple: don’t rush to build a huge catalog.
Get one offer working first.
