At 5:48 this morning the East Great Plain Fire Department and Norwich’s Squad A were dispatched the area of 84 Montville Road for a car into a brook. Car 5 arrived reporting the operator was trapped in the car.

Crews started stabilization by hooking the grip hoist to the front of the vehicle. Companies then used E-draulic tools to remove the driver’s door. The patient was then removed via a ground ladder. The Montville and Mohegan Fire Departments also operated on scene as this call was right near the town line. American Ambulance transported 1 patient to the hospital.

Local 892 would like to congratulate Firefighters Michael Christoff and Zachary Topping on their promotions to the rank of Lieutenant.

FF Christoff is a 17-year veteran of the department and has been a firefighter assigned to Platoon 2 for the entire time. Effective October 3, LT Christoff will be assigned as the company officer of Engine 2 on Platoon 4.

FF Topping is a 7-year veteran of the department and has also been a firefighter assigned to Platoon 2 throughout his career. Effective October 4, LT Topping will be assigned as the company officer of Truck 1 on Platoon 1.

Congratulations to both of these members. We wish you well in your new roles!

At 8:55 this morning, Rescue 1 & Battalion 1 responded as the FAST company to a fire at Saint Bernards High School. Mohegan Engine 21 and Mohegan Tribal Engine 1 were able to keep the fire to an office in the admissions building. The Montville Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.

At 6:17 pm Engine 1, Squad A, American Ambulance and the Norwich Police were dispatched to 217 Wightman Avenue for a car accident due to a tree branch that came down. Engine 1 arrived to find a car on a rock wall with a tree branch through the windshield. The driver was evaluated and sustained minor injuries.

We urge everyone to please stay off the roads, while letting the storm take it’s course.

It is with deep regret that Local 892 announces the recent passing of its longest serving member, Thomas Scolaro. Brother Scolaro was a true senior man on the job. Hired in 1966, he served the City of Norwich with pride for over 38 years retiring in 2005. He left a lasting legacy on the members he worked with that was felt for decades long after his retirement. His family, friends, and brothers and sisters who worked alongside him are in our thoughts during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Just after 10 am on Monday, 9/21/26 the Preston Fire Department and CT State Police were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment in front the Citgo Gas Station at 37 Route 2. While responding, Station R updated companies that a person was trapped in a vehicle on it’s side and that a separate vehicle was on fire.

P-1 had command and requested an engine from Norwich, an American Ambulance Paramedic and another BLS ambulance. Engine 11 arrived and stretched a line for the vehicle on fire. They also stabilized the second car and extricated a patient.

Local 892 would like to congratulate Lieutenant Andrew Cooke on his promotion to Captain effective at 07:00 tomorrow. Captain Cooke is a 15-year veteran of the department and has served on multiple committees that have helped shape the future of the Norwich Fire Service, while improving our operations and making us more efficient.

He assisted with the transition to the Connecticut Land Mobile Radio Network, which is the state 800 digital radio system. On the fire side, he served as a member of our Motorola Premiere One CAD team. This has brought us into the 21st century, so each piece of apparatus has a mobile data terminal that communicates directly with the dispatch center to share information. Additionally, he performed research into improvements to our alerting systems and is now overseeing a major upgrade to our station alerting systems citywide. The Honeywell Phoenix G2 System will be live in a few months, which will immediately notify firefighters of a new incident being dispatched.

Captain Cooke is also the Director of the Middlesex County Fire School, where he has taught hundreds of students in the fire service. He will be assigned to Platoon 3 as the Captain of Truck 1 overseeing the department’s truck company operations under Battalion Chief Curtin. We wish him well as he continues to shape our department.

This morning we congratulate Captain Matthew Reissner who worked his final shift last night after over 24 years of dedicated service to the City of Norwich Fire Department. Captain Reissner was hired on March 18, 2002 and was assigned as a firefighter on Platoon 2 where he served in numerous companies and assignments. In October 2013, he was promoted to Lieutenant assigned to Platoon 3. In March 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and remained on Platoon 3 assigned as the shift captain assigned to Squad A. In July of this year, the Norwich Fire Department reorganized its officer assignments and Captain Reissner was assigned as the first Captain of Truck 1. As an officer, Captain Reissner oversaw both the department’s SCBA care and maintenance program and the Hazmat Team. Throughout his time in the Norwich Fire Department, Captain Reissner was known for his intricate knowledge both within the firehouse and on the fireground.

Last night current and retired members gathered at Fire HQ to wish the Captain a well deserved farewell. Additionally, he was presented with a plaque honoring his service from the members of Local 892 during the union meeting.

His wit and experience will be hard to replace in our department. We wish you the best in your future endeavors and a safe and healthy retirement. Congratulations, you have certainly earned it.
