NORWOOD - For a brief moment on Wednesday afternoon, a major street-level operation appeared to be unfolding right on Washington Street.

According to Norwood Police Department June 10 call log, an officer on patrol noticed something unusual outside the Convenient Food Mart at 1237 Washington St.

The officer reported a high volume of quick, back-to-back hand exchanges between a female subject and passerby’s. The officer watched her as she sat outside the storefront, conducting what appeared to be rapid “hand-to-hand transactions” with approximately 20 different men.

Several officers responded to assist in what they assumed was something nefarious.

However, when officers approached the woman to investigate the nature of the rapid-fire deals, the tension quickly evaporated.

It turns out the entrepreneur wasn’t dealing anything illicit, rather she was selling car diffusers—small, portable air fresheners designed to keep vehicle interiors smelling fresh.

The woman explained to the responding officers that she was just running a perfectly legal pop-up shop and had full permission from the Convenient Food Mart store owners to set up on the property.

The steady stream of customers was simply local drivers looking to upgrade their car scents.

Having verified that the only things hitting the streets of Norwood were pleasant aromas, all police units cleared the scene without incident.

Shoutout to NPD for their keen observation and quick response. Although this was an innocent entrepreneur, a brief interaction with cooperative participants goes a long way to keep Norwood safe. -RD

Town Passes $1.8 Million Public Safety Override Amidst Historic Voter Apathy

Yesterday, local voters officially approved a critical $1.8 million public safety override. However, the victory has been largely overshadowed by staggering statistics revealing deep-seated voter apathy and structural disconnects within our community.

According to unofficial voting records, the results came in with 1,687 “Yes” votes and 1,154 “No” votes, yielding a total of 2,841 active ballots cast on the measure (with 1 additional blank ballot, bringing the total times cast to 2,842 out of 23,792 registered voters).

While the “Yes” camp is celebrating a secured budget for vital town services, the underlying data paints a far more troubling picture. As noted on the official counts, this represents an overall turnout of just 11.95%.

For a broader segment of the community, only 8.12% voted on this pivotal town issue, prompting heavy criticism on social media platforms overnight. Local channels were flooded with a mix of intense disappointment and frustration, with residents debating how such a consequential fiscal decision could be determined by so few.

The abysmal turnout highlights a shifting demographic landscape that our local leadership has seemingly failed to engage.

Over the last 11 years, it is undeniable Norwood has rapidly expanded, growing to an estimated 30,000–35,000 residents. Yet, despite this population boom, a staggering 60% of our population remains transient.

With a turnout of only 2,841 voters on the question, it is clear that a large portion of our population feels either disenfranchised or completely uninvested in municipal affairs.

What Was at Stake: A Summary of the Override

The $1.8 million public safety override was pitched to the community as a critical turning point for the town’s operational future. The initiative was designed to address severe structural deficits facing our emergency services and municipal infrastructure…LINK COMING SOON.

With fewer than 100 days remaining before the September 1st Democratic primary, the race for the Norfolk and Suffolk State Senate seat is heating up. Challenger Persis Yu officially called on long-time incumbent Senator Mike Rush to face her in a series of at least three public debates, taking aim at the incumbent’s decade-long streak without a primary opponent.

In a formal letter sent to Rush on Monday, Yu framed the debates as a necessity for a healthy local democracy, pointing out that the district’s residents have not had a competitive primary choice—or a town hall meeting with their senator—in years...READ MORE>>> https://insidenorwood.com/senator-mike-rush-stonewalls-challenger-persis-yus-invitation-to-a-debate/
