Giving days are a great opportunity to raise much needed funding because, yes, we need it, but it's also about raising awareness about the mission, how you're improving our communities through your work, and why it matters.

Now, what comes next is cultivation. If you have new donors, new people who shared your post, commented...whatever, start to cultivate those relationships.

Ask them to join your newsletter, volunteer, meet up for coffee/lunch, tour your organization, meet your service population, if appropriate. Once they're in your world, they'll have several ways in which they can further their impact.

Don't stop at the giving day.

After 14 years of personally recruiting board members for the organization I started and lead today, and helping other nonprofits successfully lead their recruitment campaigns for the past 12, I've learned that 80% of the recruitment process comes down to the interview questions.

The questions and format I've curated in my ebook, 20 Must Ask Questions to Recruit a Rockstar Board help you understand each candidate, how they fit in the board culture, and how they can best strengthen the mission BEFORE being onboarded. There's a scoring model to further assist the Nominating Committee in making their selection.

We often hope that we've recruited the right mix of members after onboarding happens, but that's too late in the process.

Starting today through next Friday I'm kicking off my first 7 day What Would You Do? governance challenge.

It's easy to participate. I'll post a common governance scenario. You'll comment on what you'd do. I'll follow up towards the end of the day with my response. That's it!

Open to all in the nonprofit space: ED/CEOs, board members, volunteers. This is a great way to collaborate and learn from one another. Here's the first one....

Last Saturday, I had the honor of leading my two hour 3G Board Leadership Intensive for a nonprofit board here in Baltimore. We walked through fiduciary duty, the realities (versus expectations) of board service, and how each person can contribute to fund development in a way that actually fits who they are.

Here's some of what they shared after the training. I'm grateful for their honesty and trust in the process. Now, it's time to implement and they already have a great start with a strategic plan already in play.

If this is a shift your board could use, I'd love to talk with you about what that could look like. Call 410.831.0829 or by email [email protected] to get started.

"I loved learning about the Framework, and having clearer direction on the roles and duties of the board." β€” Dr. Thompson, Board President

This is the kind of shift that happens when a board moves from assuming what governance looks like to actually understanding it. If your board is ready for that same clarity, let's schedule some time to talk about it.

If you're recruiting for a new board cycle for 2027, grab a copy of my ebook, 20 Must-Ask Questions to Recruit a Rockstar Board!

I've curated these questions from my personal experiences with recruitment and they've been tried and tested successfully with my clients to recruit qualified candidates to strengthen the mission and Board effectiveness.

Inside you'll find 20 strategic questions. Each question offers both green and red flag responses to help guide your decision making.

After each set of questions is a notes section so all interviewers can work collaboratively and score each candidate (scorecard is provided at the end).

After the interview process, you're left with one reference per candidate to streamline the review and selection process, but more importantly, to recruit with intent.
