Want to get into homesteading without spending an arm & a leg?

Billy Bond & I wrote a book sharing our stories of building our homesteads from scraps. The information contained in this book is as relevant and useful as ever.

A barn is the heart of a working homestead, and it doesn’t have to be expensive!

For our barn, we paid for the rafters, 4x4 posts, and roofing, then all of the structural support and siding was from a $15 truck load of log sides from our local saw mill.

All in all, this 432 sf barn cost us less than $10 per square foot to build.

This is an example of our “Scrapsteading” philosophy which has allowed us to build our family’s 3.6 acre permaculture farm and nursery business with no mortgage on an average income.

If you want to learn more about scrapsteading, Matt wrote a book about it! Get it on Amazon today — link in the comments ☺️

Tree planting recommendations from our sister nursery, Centerville Farm!

Tree planting recommendations from our sister nursery, Centerville Farm!

Our planting recommendations for most trees:

🟢 Place on the south side of a house or outbuilding
🟢 Plant with passive watering in mind
Plant on the edge of a garden that’s getting irrigated…
Below a gutter output…
By a ditch…
Or edge of a driveway, etc.

For example, we just planted this young fig below our house on the southeast side near our garden. It’s getting water runoff from our driveway and the garden.

It’s already producing 7 figs!

Let us help you build out your perennial garden 👍 Shop our remaining 2024 inventory before we pot them into bigger pots and increase prices:

2 O’Neal southern highbush blueberry
❌5 Currant (reserved)
❌5 Fig (out of stock)

This exciting project is nearing completion! We recently completed this 78' geothermal in-ground greenhouse designed to grow crops all winter, powered by solar from Shawn Mills and spring irrigated with help from Ryan Steva. Can't wait to see it growing tons of food!

We've been busy with opening season for our nursery, Centerville Farm, and with our homestead design clients, but over the next week or so we're going to update you on everything we've been up to since we've been away from here!

First up: a fun raised garden bed build in Columbia, TN! Our client had a few criteria for us, and we love a good challenge!

First, she had a crape myrtle cut down on her property and wanted us to reuse the branches somehow. Second, she was battling a pretty ferocious groundhog and pest problem and had dogs she wanted to keep out of the garden so we needed to consider that in our design.

So, we designed a fenced in garden area to keep critters out with two cattle panel trellises to maximize vertical growing space in her small yard. We used branches from the crape myrtle in the construction of two totally unique and beautiful gates and we followed the curvature of a stone pathway in her yard as we built the fence, balancing aesthetics and functionality.

We can't wait to see what gets grown in this space!
