If your home or business was impacted by last night’s storm, one of the most important things you can do is take photos and videos of the damage BEFORE beginning cleanup or making repairs.
We know the first instinct is to get everything cleaned up and back to normal as quickly as possible. But documenting the damage as it happened can be incredibly important when it comes time to handle your insurance claim.
📸 Here’s what you should do:
🔹 Take pictures and videos before cleanup begins. Document standing water, damaged ceilings and walls, roof damage, damaged belongings, and anything else affected by the storm.
🔹 If you’re sheltering in place, document damage as it happens. If it is safe to do so, take videos of water entering your home, new leaks, and any changes you notice. New cracks can appear in walls and ceilings during a storm. Narrate what you’re seeing and when it’s happening, if possible.
🔹 Document water intrusion. Water can get into walls, ceilings, flooring, and other building materials without all the damage being visible to the naked eye. Thermal imaging can help identify areas of potential moisture intrusion that may not be obvious in regular photos.
🔹 Put safety first. Never put yourself at risk to get a photo or video. Stay away from downed power lines, unstable structures, and standing water near electrical hazards. If emergency mitigation or cleanup is necessary, don’t delay it just to document everything. Take what you safely can before work begins.
