This is the picture I’m going to keep.
Yesterday at The Edit Detroit, a room full of people sat down together and talked honestly about the hardest thing there is. Grief. Mortality. What it costs to love someone through it.
It was exactly what it needed to be, exactly what I wanted it to be, and more than I expected — somehow all at once. In time, and with better timing, the numbers will come. But the numbers were never the thing. The magic was there. The conversation was there. The community was there. That’s what I asked for.
To my moderator, @[Ivana “Precious” Blakley / Precious Media] — you were the key. Yesterday does not happen without you. You held that conversation so carefully that people forgot they were being moderated and just talked. Thank you for believing in this before there was anything to believe in yet.
@[Hakeem “The People’s Poet” Weatherspoon] — you set the temperature of that room and closed it just as gently. People walked in carrying something and you gave them permission to put it down.
@[Karl Kingson] — your films and your honesty about the work of grief gave us a depth I couldn’t have reached any other way.
And Gene at FRESH BAKED PRINTS — every printed thing in that room came from you. The backdrop, the programs, the shirts, all of it. That’s family, forever. You have never once hesitated when I reach out, and I will always have your back the same way. Thank you.
Thank you to @[The Edit Detroit] for holding us, and to every single person who showed up on a Saturday afternoon to sit with something most people avoid.
Today, August 30, National Grief Awareness Day, Theresa’s List publishes in English and Spanish. It’s for Theresa Ann Miller, and for anyone walking through the six stages of facing mortality — and for the people who love them.
