30 years ago, my wife Hilda and I were planning our daughter Alina’s 5th birthday. I had always enjoyed watching clowns and magicians perform. Because our family budget was tight, I decided to try my hand at clowning. I taught myself to twist a couple of simple balloon animals, practiced some magic tricks, added a little make-up, a one-piece clown outfit, and some plastic clown shoes, and I was...ready to perform?
April 1, 1989 at 3 pm: show time at the Cordero household in Logan Square. I stood by behind a curtain as I was introduced, "Let's all welcome, Buttons the Clown!” I nervously tripped over my cheap clown shoes and continued on- the laughter and applause throughout the show put me at ease, and it seemed that Alina, her friends, and our family had a great time.
I learned a ton by attending many Clown Guild meetings and conventions around the country, and tried out nearly every type of clown face over two decades, including Whiteface, Auguste, Tramp, and Mime! I performed as Buttons the Clown for nearly 20 years, retired the make-up, and became Mr. Bob the Magic Man.
I’ve since performed for thousands of children at daycare centers, libraries, fairs, festivals, and of course, birthday parties. In 2017, I decided to dial it back a bit and only perform for birthdays.
I’ve met so many wonderful families and children of all ages and backgrounds over the years. Their smiles and laughter have fueled my own joy, and continue to be my motivation to perform. A heartfelt thank you to every family that welcomed Buttons or Mr. Bob into their homes! And an enormous thank you to my own family for supporting this silly journey. I will never be able to thank you all enough.
Enjoy these photos of the past 30 years!
Have a magical 2020!
