Cabinet of Curiosity

Cabinet of Curiosity Intimate. Grand. Inclusive. Moving. Meaningful. For us, the world is A Cabinet of Curiosity. Frank Maugeri is the founder of Cabinet of Curiosity Events.

The Cabinet of Curiosity is an experimental events company that designs sophisticated, strange and exhilarating rituals, processions, pageants and performances. Its mission is to devise artistic projects that explore the intimate and the sacred, honoring the power of dream, surprise, and physical transformation. Creating works ranging in scale from the miniature to the grand, The Cabinet of Curios

ity is committed to using theatrical events to make audiences think, feel alive, and dream more deeply. CoCE serves Chicago’s community by challenging artists and audiences to see the world around them anew, challenged and inspired by the miraculous power of enchanted objects, pseudo-sacred songs, and immersive design. He also served as the Community Programs Artistic Director at the Chicago Children’s Theatre where he developed educational classes and camps for children 0 – 14, and selected and trained the CCT teaching community. Apart in Frank start the educational programming was generating less than $50,000 of income and upon his departure, Too $hort years later, they were earning almost half $1 million. Prior to joining CCT, Maugeri was a 22-year veteran Producing Artistic Director at Redmoon Theater. He spent 22 years at the the theatre and was synonymous with the theatre’s image inspired events, mentorship accomplishments, and civic engagement strategies. He created some of Redmoons most well-known work. He conceived and directed the critically acclaimed Cabinet, the Astronauts Birthday, Boneyard Prayer, Once Upon a Time, numerous winter pageants and created The Boneshaker Halloween event which ran over one decade. He took Redmoon to the White House where he directed a Halloween celebration for the then president, Barack Obama. He directed the groundbreaking for the modern wing of the Chicago Art Institute, The grand opening Celebration of Millennium Park, numerous parades and performances along State Street, the Chicago river, the University of Chicago and more. His final show, prior to Redmoon regrettable demise. was the Devil‘s Cabaret. He founded Cabinet of Curiosity Events so he could develop work combining ritual, experimentation and celebration. Throughout his career, Maugeri has been an inventor and designer of events, spaces, and objects; choreographer of people and mechanisms; and ritual and community maker. His creations are highly visual, design-driven, movement-inspired, and object-centered. His interactive theatrical works range from intimate miniature-scale productions to mammoth public spectacles. Maugeri is also a committed teacher, mentor and convener of Chicago’s artistic community, insistent on the importance of bringing creators, designers, performers and audiences together in conversation.

On April 4th, The School of Celebration and Cabinet of Curiosity offered a civic experiment in joy—The History of Laughter and our Laughter Meditation Exercise, or… The Buddha meets George Carlin. It was more than an event; it was a shared act of public imagination. Through story, laughter, and pie, we gathered not just to be entertained, but to remember what it means to be in community—to soften, to listen, and to delight in one another.
We are deeply grateful to our partners for helping cultivate a space where joy becomes a form of connection, and connection a pathway toward collective care.

Why is waking so hard... because all of our wrongs wake with us". This is the moment of recorded text that I anxiously await each time I watch the production of the Cabinet, as it is universally true for all of us and the spirit of the show. I think it's a gut punch. The Cabinet closed today, and will return in October 2025, with some new images and new ideas. I'm very grateful to the festival for letting us resurrect this strange frightening piece of puppet theater so that we can continue to explore its universe and themes.
