FISHBIO is a fisheries and environmental consulting company that offers a fresh approach to fisheries science. Our experienced scientists, regulatory specialists, and technicians are capable of addressing complex challenges in fisheries and natural resource management. We blend leading technologies with traditional approaches to conduct fish and wildlife studies, hydrological assessments, and rest

oration projects. This includes fabricating custom equipment for fisheries research and monitoring, and conducting experiments in our fish lab facility. Learn more about our services at www.fishbio.com

California did not officially ban commercial fur trapping of beavers until 2019. That recent shift reflects a growing recognition that beavers are not just part of the landscape, but active builders of healthier wetlands, streams, and ecosystems.

When comparing coded-wire tags and parentage-based tagging, the biggest difference is physical tags versus genetic identification.

Coded-wire tags are a well-established tool and provide valuable hatchery and age data for salmon, but only a fraction of fish can be tagged, tags may be lost, and recovery can be lethal.

Parentage-based tagging offers broader coverage and non-lethal sampling, which is especially useful for threatened fish, but it requires broodstock DNA catalogs, annual genotyping, and upfront investment in lab infrastructure.

See how both methods work: fishbio.com/parentage-based-tagging

Parentage-based tagging (PBT) is a genetics-based approach that lets a salmon’s DNA act as its “tag.” Instead of implanting coded-wire tags, managers can use a small fin clip and a broodstock DNA database to learn hatchery of origin, age, and more.

After decades of advocacy from Klamath Basin Tribes, dam removal has reopened access to historic habitat for Chinook salmon and other native fish. That milestone is now shaping a new phase of restoration, monitoring, and habitat recovery across the basin and was an important topic at the 2026 Salmonid Restoration Conference.

A theme at the IEP workshop was that AI doesn’t remove uncertainty; it changes where expertise is applied.

In fisheries science, many AI tools are designed to process large amounts of routine data quickly, allowing biologists to spend more time on validation, complex cases, and decision making.

If you missed the workshop, our latest Fish Report explores how this balance is being used in practice. Read it here: fishbio.com/IEP-fisheries-AI

AI is often framed as fast-moving and always changing, but in fisheries science, accuracy, transparency, and validation are critical.

At the recent IEP workshop, researchers and managers shared how artificial intelligence is being used cautiously to support monitoring, data processing, and scientific workflows, without replacing expert judgment.

Our newest Fish Report discusses how these tools work, where they’re being used today, and why caution still matters. Read the full post here: fishbio.com/IEP-fisheries-AI

Central Valley hatcheries release roughly 32 million fall-run Chinook juveniles annually and about 25% are marked/tagged under the CFM program.

That matters because hatchery production can mask what’s happening with naturally produced fish on the spawning grounds.
