Root intrusion into pipe is the most common of clogged sewer laterals in Fond du Lac county. The roots will begin to fill the pipe like a potted plant, eventually blocking all flow. The roots grow down from the top of the pipe to the bottom and then fill outward in the pipe. It usually takes a significant amount of roots to completely block the pipe. These are removed with a rotating cutting tool on the end of a thick cable. These roots can be thick and can break off cable in the pipe. This should not be attempted on your own without previous experience.

Most of the pipe in our Fond du Lac area is clay tile pipe outside of the house and usually under the basement slab. Clay tile pipe comes in only 2' long sections, these sections are bonded by cement like mortar in brick. This breaks down over time and roots break through it and begin to fill the pipe looking for easy water and nutrients which are abundant in sewers.

This is an example of extreme root intrusion in sewer pipe. When the roots reach this level of intrusion, cabling the pipe is probably not a solution anymore and replacement is the only option.
