As the temperature is rising, snakes of many species are making their way out. Although most native snakes are harmless, we recommend you stay as far as you can from rattlesnakes. Most rattlesnake bites occur when you accidentally touch or provoke the snake. Most bites occur between the months of April and October, there are precautions that you can take to lessen the chances of being bitten. Here are some dos and don'ts involving snakes.
- Be alert! Snakes are very sensitive to the ambient temperature. After a cool night, they will try and raise their body temperature by basking in the sun midmorning. To prevent overheating during hot days of summer, the snakes will become more active at dusk.
- Don’t walk barefoot or wear sandals when walking through brushy areas. Rattlesnakes do not always rattle before striking.
- Avoid tall grasses, weeds, and heavy brush.
- Never hike alone, always take someone with you in case of an emergency.
- Always keep your dogs on leashes when going through snake country.
- If bitten by a rattlesnake stay calm, removes watches, rings, etc., which may constrict swelling, and transport victim to the nearest medical facility.
