I encounter label makers at many of my clients homes, and often they have never been touched. If you have a label maker sitting idle, I can teach you how to use it. And of course, if you don’t have one, it’s no problem. I always bring my label maker.

I never used to like labels, but I have learned to ❤️ them. In any space used by more than one person, labels are essential to keeping things in order. These labels took only a few minutes to print, but they have kept this space in order for months. And yes, there is a category called “obsolete technology”. If you’re not quite ready to let go, it’s OK.

“Nothing under nothing behind” is one of my favorite organizing mantras. This snack drawer works well, because it is organized into different zones with each snack stacked like with like. When kids can find what they are looking for without mom or dad‘s help, everyone wins.

Organizing children’s artwork and memorabilia need not be complex. My favorite system is an accordion file for each child with tabs labeled by year. Whatever doesn’t fit finds its way to the recycling bin. The accordion file naturally limits the number and size of documents that can be retained — and this has a clarifying effect on deciding what stays and what goes. Kids take ownership over their accordion files, know exactly where they are, and are excited to choose items to add to them. And when kids are ready to move on and out, they can easily take these with them.

IKEA carts, both the Rashult—shown here—and the Raskog, its big bro, are some of the most multifunctional organizers out there. These carts are sturdy enough to contain a home gym like this one—and can transition to an art supply station or an entryway drop zone as organizational needs arise. I love carts of every ilk, but IKEA makes the best IMHO.

It’s sweater weather 🍁 Whether you have two or twenty, it’s optimal to see all of your options at once. I organized this drawer using shoe boxes — fancy containers are nice, but using what you have can be just as fabulous.
