Continuing with our Black History Month Fashion Icons Series, rāv collective salutes André Leon Talley. The larger-than-life fashion editor who shattered his industry’s glass ceiling when he went from the Jim Crow South to the front rows of Paris couture. His encyclopedic knowledge of fashion history served him (and us) well as the pioneering creative director at Vogue during the magazine’s rising dominance as the world’s fashion bible. Over five decades, his byline also appeared in Vanity Fair, HG, Interview, and Women’s Wear Daily.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He knocked down doors for those to come after him. He mentored aspiring designers, such as LaQuan Smith, and emerging photographers, like Dario Calmese. Edward Enninful the first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue noted after Talley’s death “Without you, there would be no me.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
André, today, we honor and salute you!🙏🏽

Next in our Black History Month Fashion Icons Series, rāv collective is thrilled to spotlight the indelible impact of Willi Smith, a visionary designer whose creativity and innovative spirit left a lasting mark on the fashion landscape. Known as the “people’s designer,” Smith’s approach to fashion was revolutionary, making high style accessible to everyone and infusing his collections with a sense of freedom and inclusivity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Willi Smith’s brand, WilliWear, was more than just a clothing line; it was a cultural movement that broke down the barriers between high fashion and streetwear, long before it became a trend. His designs were not only wearable but also deeply reflective of the diverse, vibrant tapestry of city life. Smith’s work celebrated the every day, the eclectic, and the uniquely American experience, making him one of the most influential designers of his time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Willi, today, we honor and salute you!🙏🏽

We’re kicking off our Black History Month Fashion Icons Series with the legendary Zelda Wynn Valdes, a pioneer whose talent and vision transcended the constraints of her time. She was the go-to designer of the midcentury freakum dress💃🏽 and the mastermind behind the original Pl***oy Bunny costume!👯‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 1948, Valdes opened her boutique, Chez Zelda, making her the first Black person to own a store on Broadway in Manhattan! Valdes’ sexy but sophisticated dresses were worn and adored by Josephine Baker, Diahann Carroll, Dorothy Dandridge, Ruby Dee, Eartha Kitt, Marlene Dietrich, and Mae West, to name a few. Valdes took immense pride in making women of all shapes and sizes look and feel confident and sexy!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 1970, she was approached by Arthur Mitchell, who was the first black principal dancer to perform in the New York City Ballet, he wanted Valdes to design costumes for the Dance Theatre of Harlem. She did away with the traditional pink tights of ballet … all the dancers wore tights that were dyed to match their skin tone!🤎
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As someone who faced discrimination in what is still a predominately white industry, she led the National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers. This coalition was founded with the sole purpose of promoting black designers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Her legacy is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and unapologetic self-expression in breaking through barriers and making a permanent mark on Black fashion history.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zelda, today, we honor and salute you!🙏🏽
