One of the biggest changes I had to make when I switched from doing speech therapy to doing transformation work was to stop thinking in terms of hourly rates and, instead, think about the benefits my services provide.
💰 What is dancing pain-free worth to an avid dancer?
💰 What is having unlimited energy worth to a mother of 3?
💰 What is being excited and feeling on purpose worth for an overwhelmed and overworked entrepreneur?
These are the questions I have my clients ask when they work with me.
It is the value we put into the world that determines how much something is worth. Not how many letters we have after our name, not how many years we’ve been in business, and definitely not how many hours we spend helping someone.
It’s that value exchange and owning that value/ self-worth that determines our net worth.
I bring that mindset to everything that I do and perceive, including my hobbies.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love partner dancing.
This weekend I attended a dance congress where 3 types of dancing were offered alongside each other: Salsa, Bachata & Brazilian Zouk.
Brazilian Zouk was apparently almost left out because “it doesn’t sell well”.
Yet it’s my favorite dance. It's complex, connected, sensual, structured yet flowy… all in all magical.
After dancing Salsa and Bachata for 10 years, Brazilian Zouk took my level of sensitivity and self-expression through the roof in a way that Salsa and Bachata never could.
Why then would it not “sell well”?
🎯 If someone is looking to learn some patterns and get out on the dance floor as soon as possible, they will look for a simple dance.
🎯 If someone wants easy access to a dance community, they will choose a well-known dance.
🎯 If someone needs the certainty of knowing how their skill level progresses, they will choose a dance that assesses skill level on a points system using competitions.
Brazilian Zouk has none of that.
In the US - and even in Brazil - the dance communities are small. The technique takes a long time to master. There is no points system and no competition that assesses how far along you are. Yet people who get hooked on it tend to never fully return to the other types of dances they did before.
That’s because Brazilian Zouk offers something many people don’t know they need: ✨deep connection, ✨individual self-expression, ✨healing, ✨spiritual growth.
It’s no surprise that dancers who stay and master the dance are those who have experienced dance in many forms for years before, and are now looking for the next level.
What does all of this have to do with business and sales?
It teaches about positioning.
If someone decided to speak to the real benefits Brazilian Zouk dance provides and connect them to the needs of a specific target market consistently, there would be no problem selling tickets to a Brazilian Zouk event.
They could build a million dollar business.
This is what I call an untapped niche.
When something is not well-known or “hot” from the get-go, the tendency is to discount it as not valuable, or “hard to sell”.
I like to challenge that mindset, and instead I say:
“Look for how many people need what this thing provides.” If there are more than 100,000 people around the world who need it, you’ve got a million dollar business idea.
👉 Forget about trading time for dollars.
👉 Focus on providing value.
👉 Speak about that value consistently and relentlessly to a target market that you is looking for the benefits your offer provides.
