Surviving recurrent metastatic cancer is truly a fu***ng miracle. I am forever grateful. And, I’m forever changed. I’m am not a better person for it. It sucks. Weekly doctors appointments, chronic pain, debilitating brain fog, fatigue, so much ongoing grief and loss… buoyed by the wonder of being alive.
Several decades ago I befriended a man who openly discussed being an in**st survivor. I called him a fierce warrior and he deflected, saying that diminished an experience that requires ongoing healing. So many in**st survivors could not speak up and they too were brave. I mentioned that in**st was one of the most awful things and I was sorry and that nothing good could come of it. My friend then said something that has always stayed with me: No matter how terrible an ordeal is, if you survive, someone else is going through it and you can be there for them.
