Traveling throughout Italy over many years we have observed tourists either on their own or with big tour companies wrestling with hoards of exhausted adults and screaming kids packed shoulder to shoulder in a museum, or pushing through crowds on the street with their gelato melting all over their hands, or waiting in line after line in the summer heat, or missing some close by beautiful, historic

sites simply because they didn't know where to look, or they just didn't have time. And, stories of having to pack and unpack every few days to move on to the next town. Italy is beauty. Passion. It should not be ‘visited’ as a ‘tourist’, but felt and lived. Have you imagined living in a countryside Italian villa wanting to experience the 'bella vita' of living Italian. Stopped by for lunch today. In La Sterza / Lajatico where the family is from. Just 20mins. from the house. Packed with people going to concert tonight. Restaurant owned/run by Andrea’s brothers son, food is excellent. Andrea has a villa across the road up on the hill. Just 10mins. from show at Teatro del Silenzio. Oh, and that’s not our car . . . couldn’t resist the tease (couldn’t afford it anyway, but it kinda goes with my shirt!?).

Michelangelo's Moses is a marble sculpture circa 1513–15. One of the many details of this masterpiece is one very small muscle in the forearm that contracts only when lifting the pinky, otherwise it is invisible. Moses is lifting the pinky, therefore that tiny muscle is contracted. Genius!

Every year just prior to tourist season here in Volterra, on the 3rd or 4th Saturday in April the 'mercato' moves from the main piazza, Piazza dei Priori and Piazza San Giovanni down to the big parking lot adjacent to the ancient Roman Theatre and Roman Baths for 5 months. This opens up Piazza dei Priori for summertime festivals, music and neighborhood competitions like crossbow accuracy, flag throwing, tug-of-war, the medieval festival, Volterra 1398, etc. From the picture out of our apartment window you can see the white trucks of the mercato on the left side on its 2023 1st Saturday down in the parking lot. To the far right you can see the massive Church of Santi Giusto e Clemente, our parish church. And tourist season begins . . .

Italy keeps getting smaller! Riding these trains is like flying in an airplane . . . but with more room, and you can choose seats in different compartments like the 'Quiet' compartment (meaning mostly no excessive conversations, nor kids running around), or 'Business' compartment with tables to sit around for meetings . . . not much more expensive but more options then flying!
